Whether it’s through conditioning in the Omaha Challenge, or in preseason scrimmages, McDonnell believes in creating competitive situations to give his players numerous opportu- nities to prepare for what they will see during conference and NCAA Championship games. One of the most effective ways McDonnell and his coaching staff can provide the Louisville players with those competitive, game-like situations is through the annual Pizza Bowl series. Following seven weeks of fall practice sessions, the Cardinals take to the field for what started as a one-game scrimmage in the fall of 2006 and has become an ultra competitive five-game intra-squad series. The winning team is rewarded by being served as much pizza as it would like by the losing squad, which in turn shares what is left. The Pizza Bowl series has become an exciting and highly anticipated ending to the fall for Louisville coaches, players and fans. Eclipse Park burned down in 1922 and Parkway Field was constructed in 1923 on the UofL campus adjacent to Eastern Park- way. The first UofL home game at Parkway was in 1924 before it became a full-time home to the Cards around 1952. The grandstand was torn down in 1961. Louisville baseball made Parkway home until 1996, when home games were moved to Derby City Field. UofL began to play a portion of its games in Old Cardinal Stadium in 1998 and made it a full- time home in the spring of 2000, when the Louis- ville Riverbats moved to Louisville Slugger Field. The spacious confines of Cardinal Stadium on the grounds of the Kentucky Exposition Center played host the Cardinal Nine for the first 20 games of the 2005 slate before the move to spectacular Jim Patterson Stadium. Parkway saw its final demise on January 15, 2005 when the “Green Monster” was torn down. Remnants of historic Parkway Field remain at Pat- terson Stadium as bricks from the wall support the lighting towers and infield dirt has been placed on the mound and plate area. Today, the Cardinals have a stadium and adja- cent facilities to call their own and are among the best in the nation. Two captains are selected and teams are drafted to com- pete against one another in a five-day series of events that tests the athleticism of the teams and the individu- als, with a team crown and an individual champion to be named at the conclusion. Sports performance coach Zach Farrel oversees the intense competition, while also motivating his charges to extend themselves to their limits. Among the criteria for awarding the scholarship to an active member of the UofL baseball team includes that the student- athlete be in good academic standing, active within the CardsCare outreach program and demonstrates exemplary leadership qualities on and off the field. Jimmy Carraro was a member of the Cardi- nals baseball team while he attended UofL in the mid 1970’s. The Jimmy Carraro Award was given annually from 2000-15 to a UofL base- ball player who exceled in academics, athletics and community involvement, strives for excel- lence and personifies good sportsmanship. At the conclusion of every academic cal- endar, one male and one female student- athlete are chosen to receive the Ed Kallay Award for service to the community as well as accomplishments in the classroom and on the field competition. The baseball team is proud to have supported nine Ed Kallay Award winners.
