Davis Taken With No. 1 Overall Pick in MLB Draft Catcher Henry Davis was selected with the first overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2021 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Davis was the first Louisville baseball player to be selected first overall and the fourth student-athlete taken No. 1 overall from the University of Louisville regardless of sport. Davis joins Pervis Ellison (NBA, 1989), Angel McCoughtry (WNBA, 2009) and Andrew Farrell (MLS, 2013) as No. 1 picks from UofL. He was the fifth all-time top selection from the ACC and first since Pat Burrell was taken with the top pick out of Miami in 1998. Seven Cardinals Selected in 2021 MLB Draft It was another banner year in the MLB Draft for the University of Louisville as seven Cardi- nals were selected during the 20-round event. Henry Davis became the first Louisville player in program history to be selected with the No. 1 overall pick to headline six Cardi- nals taken in the top 10 rounds. Alex Binelas (Milwaukee Brewers, third round), Cooper Bowman (New York Yankees, fourth round), Michael Kirian (Washington Nationals, sixth round), Lucas Dunn (San Diego Padres, eighth round), Luke Brown (Pittsburgh Pirates, ninth round) and Glenn Albanese (Los Angeles Angels, 15th round) were also selected, giving the Cardinals 82 players that have signed professional con- tracts after being selected in the draft during Dan McDonnell’s tenure. Davis Named Consensus All-American Henry Davis added his name to the grow- ing list of Louisville baseball All-Americans as he garnered All-America honors from each of the major services. He was the 32nd player in Louisville histo- ry to be named an All-American and the 44th overall All-America selection for the program. During Dan McDonnell’s 15 seasons, the Cardinals have had 40 All-America selections. Davis led the Cardinals with a .370 bat- ting average to go along with career-best totals in home runs (15) and RBIs (48). The sophomore led the ACC in on-base percent- age and ranked in the top 10 in the league in batting average, hits, home runs, RBIs, total bases and slugging percentage. Davis Named Buster Posey Award Finalist, Golden Spikes and Dick Howser Semifinalist Henry Davis was named one of three finalists for the Buster Posey National Colle- giate Catcher of the Year Award by the Great- er Wichita Area Sports Commission. He was also selected as a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy. Davis capped off an outstanding three- year career at Louisville with a stellar 2021 campaign. The catcher was a unanimous All-American this spring after hitting a team- best .370 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs, while throwing out better than 46 percent of base stealers. Five Cardinals Named to All-ACC Academic Team The Louisville baseball program had five student-athletes named to the 2021 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team. Alex Binelas, Kaleb Corbett, Henry Davis, Lucas Dunn and Luke Seed were all rec- ognized for their work in the classroom. It marks the second All-ACC Academic Team nod for both Binelas and Dunn, who were also on the team in 2019. Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average dur- ing one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season were also considered in selection the All-ACC Academic Team. Cardinals Set ACC Championship Home Run Record Louisville opened the 2021 ACC Cham- pionship with a bang, pounding out seven home runs in a 15-10 victory over Clemson at Truist Field in Charlotte. The seven long balls were an ACC Cham- pionship record by a single team and the most in any game for the Cardinals since hit- ting eight against Marshall on April 3, 2007. Alex Binelas homered three times on the afternoon as part of a 4-for-5 day with six RBIs. He was the first UofL player to hit Henry Davis Alex Binelasgocards.com | University of Louisville 91 BASEBALL A Look Back at 2021 three in a single game since Adam Duvall did the same against Notre Dame on April 26, 2009. The three home runs also tied the ACC Championship single game record by an individual player. Ben Metzinger and Henry Davis each homered twice on the day, the first multi- home run games of their respective careers. Four Cardinals Earn All-ACC Honors Alex Binelas, Cooper Bowman, Henry Davis and Christian Knapczyk were all named to the 2021 All-ACC teams. Davis was a first team selection at catch- er, while Bowman was on the second team at second base. Binelas and Knapczyk were voted to the third team at first base and shortstop, respectively. Knapczyk was also one of 12 players named to the ACC All- Freshman Team. Corbett Named to Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List Freshman reliever Kaleb Corbett was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year midseason watch list. One of 65 players on the midseason watch list, the right-hander had a dominant start to his collegiate career, tossing 17.1 scoreless innings before allowing his first run. Corbett finished his first season at Lou- isville with a 2-1 record, four saves and 33 strikeouts in 27.2 innings. Louisville Continues Excellence in the Classroom The Louisville baseball program turned in another outstanding year in the classroom, capped off by its 20th consecutive semester with a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The Cardinals posted a 3.34 team GPA during the spring semester, extending its streak that dates back to 2011. The span of 20 straight semesters with a team GPA of 3.0 or better coincides with unparalleled success on the field for Louis- ville, which has four College World Series appearances, six NCAA Super Regional berths, eight NCAA Regional bids and seven conference championships during that time. Binelas Earns D1 Baseball National Player of the Week Sophomore Alex Binelas got off to a slow start in 2021, but his bat caught fire in the middle of March. Binelas was named the D1Baseball National Player of the Week for March 22-28 after going 7-for-10 (.700) with two triples, two home runs and 10 RBIs in three games against Western Kentucky and Notre Dame. Binelas opened the week with a 4-for- 4 showing against WKU with five RBIs, becoming the first Louisville player with two triples in the same game since Ty Young during the 2013 season. He then homered in both games at Notre Dame, including a game-tying shot in the ninth inning of the Saturday game. Kirian Named ACC Pitcher of the Week Following a career night on the mound at NC State, Michael Kirian was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week. Kirian took a no-hitter into the eighth inning Friday night at NC State, finishing the evening with one run allowed on two hits with a career-best 13 strikeouts on his way to improving to 4-0 on the season. The southpaw retired the first 11 hitters he faced before a two-out walk in the fourth inning. Kirian followed the free pass by retir- ing the next 10 NC State hitters. Masterman Named ACC Co-Player of the Weeo It was a weekend to remember for junior Cameron Masterman in the opening series against Bellarmine. The outfielder went 6-for-11 (.545) with three home runs and six RBIs and was named the ACC co-Player of the Week. Masterman entered the 2021 season with two home runs and eight RBIs in his Louis- ville career before homering in each game of the series. He was the first Louisville player to homer in three consecutive games since Alex Binelas in May of 2019, and the first Cardinal to do so in the first three games of the season since Tom LaFramboise in 1964. Cardinals Earn No. 1 Ranking Following a 6-1 start to the season, the Cardinals became the top-ranked team in the country according to Perfect Game. Louisville opened the season at No. 2 in Perfect Game’s rankings before moving into the top spot. It marked the third time Louisville has been the No. 1 team in a poll, holding the top spot for two weeks during March of 2017 and then opening the 2020 season atop the polls.
