The Wildcats are 19-1 in season openers in the 20 seasons of Jay Wright’s tenure as head coach, including the last 18 in a tow since a 73-61 loss to Marquette to open the 2002-03 regular season at Madison Square Garden. In its 2020-21 season opener the Wildcats knocked off Boston College 76-67 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. » After a season played in front of no fans due to the COVID- 19 pandemic, Villanova anticipates a return to its capacity of 6,501. Per CDC and University guidelines, all attending games at Finneran are being asked to be masked while inside, regardless of vaccination status. » Collin Gillespie was named Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year and to the Preseason Associated Press All-American team. Gillespie suffered a season-ending injury to his left knee in a 72-60 victory over Creighton on March 3 and underwent surgery later that month. He resumed basketball activities in August and has been a full participant in practice since that point. » Head Coach Jay Wright begins the new season with 612 career victories, including 490 at Villanova. The 2021 inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is the Wildcats’ all-time leader in program victories. » Like Gillespie, Jermaine Samuels elected to exercise an additional year of eligibility offered by the NCAA in April. Samuels played through a broken bone in his right pinky before having the injury surgically repaired in April. Samuels, a second team preseason All-BIG EAST selection, enters the new season with 875 career points in 115 career games (7.6 ppg average). » The third member of the Wildcats to earn recognition in the preseason from the BIG EAST is junior guard Justin Moore. The Maryland native was a second team-choice after averaging 12.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per outing. » On Wednesday Villanova is scheduled to fly west in preparation for its game Friday nigth at No. 2 UCLA.
