< Previous2020-21 Year in Reviewgocards.com n University of Louisville 79 BASKETBALL Reviewing 2020-21 Season Cardinals Are No. 2 Seed In Big Dance Louisville was a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tour- nament for the first time in program history. The Cardinals were a No. 1 seed in 2018 (Final Four) and 2019 (Elite Eight). < Louisville made its 23rd NCAA Tourna- ment appearance and 12th in 13 tournaments under head coach Jeff Walz. The Cardinals played in their 10th straight NCAA Tournament. Louis- ville is 37-23 all-time. They were 4-11 in their first 11 appearances and are 33-12 in their 12 appearances with Walz. They have moved on to the Sweet 16 10 times, the Elite Eight six times, Final Four three times (2009, 2013, 2018) and twice advanced to the title game. With three Final Fours since 2009, UofL ranks fourth in the coun- try behind UConn (12), Stanford (7) and Notre Dame (6). Louisville Advances to Third Straight Elite Eight UofL advanced to its third straight Elite Eight and sixth overall (2009, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021) with the win over Oregon. UofL is 3-3 all-time in the Elite Eight. With the win over Oregon, UofL is 6-4 all-time in the Sweet 16. The Cards are 3-7 all-time against 1-seeds in the NCAA Tournament. They are 3-6 against 1-seeds under Walz. Dana Evans Named Consensus All-American Dana Evans was named a WBCA, USBWA, As- sociated Press, Wooden Award, Senior CLASS, es- pnW and Sports Illustrated First Team All-American. Evans Named ACC Player of the Year For Second Straight Season Senior Dana Evans was named ACC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Ev- ans joins Asia Durr as the only players in program history to earn conference player of the year mul- tiple times. She is the ninth player in ACC his- tory to win the award in back-to-back years. She became the first player in league history to go from winning ACC Sixth Player of the Year to win- ning ACC Player of the Year the following season. It marks the fourth straight year that the confer- ence’s top honor has come from the Cardinals program, as Louisville joins Duke as the only two programs with the ACC Player of the Year in four consecutive years. Evans was named Kay Yow Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She joins Durr as the only Cardinals to win this prestigious award. Several Cards Earn Acc Honors In addition to Evans being named the ACC Player of the Year, Mykasa Robinson was named to the All-ACC Defensive Team and Olivia Co- chran and Hailey Van Lith were named to the All-ACC Freshman Team. Robinson is the first named to All-Defensive team since Kylee Shook and Jazmine Jones did so in 2019-20, while Cochran and Van Lith are first on All-Freshman team since Evans did so in 2017-18. Liz Dixon, Evans, Robinson, Kianna Smith and Van Lith were named to the All-ACC Academic team. Evans, Ki- anna Smith and Van Lith were all named to ACC All-Tournament team. Quick Hitters < Last Four Years - Louisville went 122-15 (.891) over the last four seasons. < Fourth Straight ACC Title - UofL won its fourth straight ACC title and second straight outright title. It marks the ninth conference title in program history. Prior to this stretch, Louisville had never won consecutive regular season con- ference titles. < Second Best Start Ever - UofL won its first 16 games, which marked the second best start in program history. The Cards started a pro- gram-record 20-0 in 2017-18. < Busy New Year - Played 11 games (11- 0) in January and the 11 wins were the most ever in the first month. The 11 games were the most in January in Jeff Walz’s tenure. UofL played a program-high 12 games in January in 1979-80 (5-7) and 1981-82 (7-5). < Leading at Half - Louisville went 25-1 when leading at half and 1-3 when trailing at half. Their win over Northwestern marked their first win of the season when trailing at the half and loss against Stanford was first time losing when leading at half. < In ACC Play - Over last four seasons, the Cardinals are 67-10 (.870) in ACC regular season and tournament games combined. UofL is 59-7 (.894) in ACC regular season games. They are 30-4 (.882) in home games and 29-3 (.906) in road games. < Hot Shooting - Louisville shot 46.1 per- cent from the floor, which ranked third in the ACC, 16th in the country and is just shy of the school-record 48.2 percent in 2017-18. < Scoring Offense - UofL averaged 76.8 points per game, which ranked second in the ACC and 20th in the country, and is just shy of the best mark in program history, 79.0 in 1990-91. Reaching #1 On Jan. 18, UofL reached No. 1 in the AP and USA Today polls for the first time in program his- tory. UofL is one of seven teams to be ranked No. 1 in the AP poll the last decade, joined by Baylor, UConn, Notre Dame, Oregon, South Carolina and Stanford. Most Uofl Victories UofL’s 26 wins ranked 10th all-time. The top seven and 11 of the 12 top win totals have come under Walz. Another 20-Win Season UofL is 26-4 and has reached 20 wins for the 11th straight season to extend the program record. The longest run previously was three, achieved twice. The Cards have won at least 20 games in 13 of Walz’s 14 seasons. Prior to Walz’s arrival, Louisville had just 10 20-win seasons in its history. Comeback Cards < vs. Northwestern - Louisville trailed by 18 points at 25-7 in the first quarter, which matched its largest deficit of the season - 65- 47 vs. NC State on Feb. 1. They trailed by 14 points (34-20) in the second half, which marked it’s largest second half defict of the season. UofL used a 17-0 rally and the game was tied at 40 heading into the fourth. After allowing 25 points in the first quarter, which was the most given up in the first, UofL allowed just 27 points the rest of the way. < Third Largest Comeback in NCAA Tournament History - Louisville’s 18-point comeback against Northwestern is tied for the third largest in NCAA Tournament history. Texas A&M rallied from 21 down against Penn in 2017 and Oklahoma State rallied from 19 down against Chattanooga in 2010. Maryland also came back from 18 down against Texas A&M in 2012. < vs. Marist - After trailing 21-12 with 8:16 to go in the second, Louisville outscored Marist 62-22 the rest of the way. They used runs of 17-3 and 22-1 to pull away. The UofL defense limited the Red Foxes to just seven field goals combined in the second, third and fourth quarters, including one (1-12) in the third quarter. The nine-point rally matched the best rally of the year, prior to the 18-point comeback against Northwestern. In the first two rounds, they allowed 40 points in the first quarter, but just 56 combined in the second, third and fourth quarters. Marist and Northwestern shot a com- bined 48.3 percent in the first quarter, but UofL held them to 20.9 percent shooting in the sec- ond, third and fourth quarters. Dana By The Numbers Evans led the ACC with 20.1 points per game and ranked eighth with 3.9 assists per game. She ranked second in the ACC and 16th in the country with a 87.3 free throw percentage. Evans went 89-102 (.873) from the line on the season and was 57-59 (.966) in ACC play. She made 43 consecutive free throws from 12/6-2/7 prior to going 5-6 against Notre Dame. < Evans reached 20-plus points in 19 games, which ranked seventh nationally entering the NCAA Tournament. She has 31 career 20-point games and UofL is 29-2 in those games. She scored in double figures in 29 of 30 games and scored in double figures in the first 23 games and 40 straight games overall prior to scoring eight points against Wake Forest in the ACC Tour- nament opener. It marked the longest streak at UofL in the last 20 years. Angel McCoughtry had a 36-game streak from 2007-09. More Milestones For Dana < Evans Moves Up Scoring List - Dana Evans concluded her career with 1,715 career points which ranks ninth all-time at Louisville. < Evans Moves Up Dimes List - Dana Evans ranks sixth all-time with 521 assists. < Evans From The Stripe - Evans shot 85.8 percent for her career from the line, which is the best in program history. < Evans From Deep - Evans finished with 222 career made 3’s, which ranks sixth all-time at UofL. Evans Sets New Standard Evans, the lone senior, finished with a career record of 122-15 (.891). She concludes her career at UofL with the fewest losses and best winning percentage in program history. She is the only player in program history to claim four regular season conference titles. She finishes three wins shy of tying the 2019-20 class (Bi- onca Dunham, Jazmine Jones, Jessica Laemmle, Kylee Shook) that finished 125-19 (.868) with the most wins in four years. Walz In The Big Dance Walz boasts a 33-12 record in NCAA Tour- nament games. He is ninth all-time in winning percentage and 5th among active coaches. He has directed UofL to a pair of national runner-up finishes (2009, 2013), three Final Fours (2009, 2013, 2018), six Elite Eights (2009, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021), 10 trips to the Sweet 16 and 12 NCAA Tournaments. ESPN Lists Mykasa Robinson As Top 12 Defensive Player ESPN.com’s Mechelle Voepel recognized Mykasa Robinson as one of the top 12 defenders in the country, “She makes this list as the quintes- sential “do the little things” player whose calling card is defense. Louisville star Dana Evans credits Robinson with bringing scrappiness to what is pe- rennially one of the ACC’s top defenses.” < Robinson had 17 starts on the season, 16 of which have come in the last 19 games. In the win at Pitt, she had a career-high nine re- bounds and five steals, along with a season-high six points and five assists, while committing zero turnovers. She had a career-high 10 points on 5-5 shooting at Notre Dame, while taking an in- credible five charges. She played a career-high 38 minutes and contributed eight rebounds, four assists and two steals against Wake Forest. She had seven points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals vs. Marist. She had four points and tied a career-high with nine rebounds against Northwestern. Norman Named WBCA Division I Assistant Coach of the Year Associate head coach Stephanie Norman was named the 2021 Division I Assistant Coach of the Year.
