Bernard "Peck" Hickman 1944-1967 Denny Crum 1971-2001 Before Bernard "Peck" Hickman arrived, UofL had produced only one winning season in its previous nine. Hickman promptly turned the Cardinals' program around, guiding his initial UofL team in 1944 to a 16-3 record and starting a string of 46 consecutive winning seasons for the Cardinals. In 23 seasons at UofL (1944-67), Hickman directed the Cardinals to a 443-183 overall record, a .708 winning percentage that ranks him among the top 45 NCAA Division I coaches of all time. He never had a team with a losing record, produced eleven 20-win seasons at UofL and averaged over 19 victories a season. He guided the Cardinals to five NCAA Tournament appearances and six NIT appearances. In only his fourth season at UofL, Hickman’s Cardinals won the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball Tour- nament (NAIB) in 1948, the school’s first national championship. Eight years later, his 1956 team won the NIT championship. He directed UofL to its first NCAA Final Four appearance in 1959. Hickman took over the administrative responsibilities of serving as UofL’s Director of Athletics in 1954. He remained in the dual role of athletic director and head basket- ball coach until his retirement from coaching in 1967. His .708 winning percentage ranked seventh among active major college coaches when he retired to devote full time to his athletic director duties, a position he held until 1973. He died at the age of 88 on Feb. 20, 2000. One of the most impressive eras in collegiate basket- ball came to an end following the 2000-01 season as for- mer UofL Coach Denny Crum retired after 30 seasons with the Cardinals. The man admirably labeled “Cool Hand Luke” by former commentator Al McGuire was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame on May 9, 1994. He directed Louisville to the 1980 and the 1986 NCAA Championships, ranking him as one of only 10 coaches in NCAA history to win two or more titles. Six times he guided the Cardinals into the NCAA Final Four, including four times in the decade of the ’80s. Only three coaches all-time coached more Final Four teams than Crum. He directed the Cardinals to 23 NCAA Tournament appearances. Three of his squads participated in the NIT, reaching the NIT semifinals in 1985. The Cardinals captured or shared 12 Metro Conference regular season titles and 11 post-season tournament championships under Crum’s guidance. Crum engineered UofL to 20 or more victories in 21 of his 30 seasons. Crum’s 675 victories rank him 15th all-time, holding a 675-295 career record. His NCAA Tournament mark is 42-23. He retired at the conclusion of the 2000-01 season and continued to work as a special assistant to the UofL president for several years. The KFC Yum! Center court has been named in his honor, as is the new Denny Crum Hall residence hall on campus that houses the men’s basketball team among others. Crum died on May 9, 2023 at the age of 86. John Dromo 1967-71 John Dromo joined University of Louisville staff as an assistant coach in both football and basketball in 1948, begining the longest coaching tenure in UofL history. He remained an assistant football coach under Frank Camp until 1951, when he gave up football to become the Cardinals’ head golf coach. While an assistant for 17 years under Ber- nard “Peck” Hickman, UofL produced a 359-162 record, won the 1956 NIT Championship, played in five NCAA Tournaments and reached the 1959 NCAA Final Four. He succeeded Hickman as head coach in 1967, compiling a 68-23 record (.747 winning percentage) in nearly four seasons as UofL’s head basketball coach (1967-71). His first UofL team was 21-7, won the Missouri Valley Conference title and went to the NCAA Tournament. A heart attack during the 1970-71 season forced Dromo from continuing as the Cardinals’ basketball coach. He died on Sept. 29, 1992 at the age of 76. The first coach in NCAA history to take three different teams to the NCAA Final Four, Pitino was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. In 32 seasons as a collegiate head coach at five different schools, Pitino compiled a 647-268 record. He had a 293-- 140 record in 16 seasons at UofL, the third winningest coach in Cardinal history. Those figures do not include a record of 123-3 for games vacated by the NCAA Committee on Infractions, which reduced his on-court overall record of 770-271 and UofL record of 416-143. In Pitino’s 16 years at UofL, the Cardinals produced 13 NCAA Tournament appear- ances, seven Sweet 16s, three Final Fours, a national title and five Elite Eight appearances over the last nine years. However, four years of vacated records including four NCAA Tournament appearances, four Sweet 16s, three Elite Eights, two Final Fours, and a national championship reduce those figures. A 2006 inductee to the New York City Hall of Fame, Pitino is one of a select group of 12 coaches who took teams from four different schools to the NCAA Tournament. He guided Kentucky to three NCAA Final Four appearances in eight seasons (1989-97), winning the 1996 NCAA Championship and reaching the national title game in 1997. He also served as head coach at Providence College (1985-87, 1987 Final Four), Boston University (1978-83), Hawaii (last six games in 1975-76) as well as the NBA New York Knicks (1987-89) and Boston Celtics (1997-2001). David Padgett 2017-18 David Padgett was named interim head men’s basketball coach at UofL on Sept. 29, 2017 and served in that capacity for the entire 2017-18 season. He guided the Cardinals to a 22-14 record in his lone year. His 22 coaching victories were the second-most for a first-year coach in Louisville history behind only Denny Crum’s 26-5 record initial season in 1971-72. Padgett joined Crum and John Dromo (21 wins in 1967-68) as the only UofL coaches to have won 20 games in their first season with the Cardinals. Padgett was just the third head coach for the Cardinals in a 47-year period. At the age of 33, he was the third-youngest head coach in NCAA Division I and the youngest among Power 5 schools. A three-year starter and captain at center for the Cardinals (2005-08), Padgett was a unanimous first-team All-Big East Conference selection as a senior. He participated in three NCAA Tournaments as a player, reaching the regional finals twice. Chris Mack 2018-2022 Chris Mack, whose teams participated in the NCAA Tournament in nine of his first 13 seasons as a head coach, was named as the head coach of the University of Louisville men’s basketball team on March 28, 2018. In his first season at UofL, Mack guided the Cardinals to a 20-14 record and earned a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament while facing the nation’s fourth-toughest schedule. He followed that with a 24-7 record in 2019-20 and tied for second in the ACC (15-5 record, most in UofL’s six years in the ACC), with the postseason canceled due to COVID-19. In his third season with the Cardinals in 2020-21, the previous national coach of the year navigated one of the least experienced teams in the nation through pandemic protocols and a shortened season to achieve a 13-7 record and 8-5 ACC mark, the 15th straight season UofL had won eight or more conference games. Mack missed the first six games of the 2021-22 season and later parted ways with the university on Jan. 26, 2022. Assistant coach Mike Pegues served as interim head coach in Mack’s absence at both the beginning and end of the season. Kenny Payne 2022-2024 Kenny Payne, a veteran college and NBA coach with 18 years of coaching experience and a former Cardinal bas- ketball great, was named head men’s basketball coach at the University of Louisville on March 18, 2022. Payne ended his tenure as head coach of the Cardinals with a record of 12-52 over his two seasons. Before returning to UofL, Payne served as an assistant coach with the NBA’s New York Knicks after 15 years as a college assistant or associate head coach with both the University of Oregon and the University of Kentucky. The Knicks posted a 41-31 record in 2020-21 when Payne was on staff, finishing fourth in NBA Eastern Conference and were 35-45 through April 6. While at Oregon and Kentucky, teams in which he coached reached four Final Fours, participated in 10 NCAA Tournaments (two at Oregon) and won six conference tournaments (one at Oregon), compiling a collective 395-165 record (.705). The 2006-07 Oregon team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for only the fifth time in school history at that time. Kentucky reached the Final Four in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015 with Payne, winning the 2012 NCAA Championship. During his tenure, Payne was the only Division I men’s basketball head coach in the country who was an NBA Draft pick and also won national championships as a player and a coach, including as an assistant. As a student-athlete at UofL, Payne scored 1,083 points in his four years and was a member of Louisville’ 1986 NCAA Championship team as a freshman. During his collegiate career, Louisville participated in three NCAA Sweet 16s and won three Metro Conference championships and three Metro tournament titles while posting a combined 98-41 record. He was selected in the first round of the 1989 NBA Draft with the 19th overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers, where he played four seasons. UofL informed Payne that he would not return as the men’s basketball head coach on March 13, 2024, concluding his tenure with an overall record of 12-52, including a 5-37 record against ACC competition. In his first year at the helm in Louisville, Pat Kelsey led the Cardinals to a 27-8 overall record, tying for second in the ACC with an 18-2 conference record. Louisville made its first appearance in an ACC Tournament semifinal and championship game as the Cards finished runner-up to No. 1 Duke in the title game. Kelsey, tabbed as ACC Coach of the Year, led Louisville to an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals competed in the Big Dance for the first time since 2019, as an eight-seed, and fell to Creighton in the Round of 64. Kelsey recruited an entirely new team in 2024-25, returning no scholarship players from the previous season. Chucky Hepburn earned All-ACC First Team honors while also being named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and an AP Honorable Mention All-American. Terrence Edwards Jr. picked up Third Team All-ACC honors. The Cardinals were one of the most improved teams in the country both in total wins from the previous season and in NET ranking from the end of 2023-24 to the end of 2024-25. Kelsey restored Louisville’s standing amongst the elite basketball programs in the country, returning the Cardinals to the AP Top 25, ranking as high as No. 10 on the season in the March 17 rankings.
