As one of only 21 universities in the United States to earn recognition by the Carnegie Foundation as both a Research 1 and Oppor- tunity College university, we are uniquely posi- tioned to impact lives in areas of student suc- cess and research and innovation. Also recog- nized as a Carnegie Community Engaged uni- versity, our dynamic connection with our local and global communities provides unparalleled opportunities for students and citizens both. Located just south of the heart of Ken- tucky’s largest city, UofL’s Belknap Campus is home to eight of the university’s 12 aca- demic schools and colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and Human Devel- opment, the J.B. Speed School of Engineering, the Graduate School, the Brandeis School of Law, the School of Music and the Kent School of Social Work and Family Science. The Health Sciences Center is located in downtown Lou- isville’s medical complex and is home to the schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry and Public Health and Information Sciences, along with University of Louisville Hospital and UofL Health – Jewish Hospital. He had served as Interim Athletic Director since December 2021. Since assuming leadership, Heird has guided Louisville Athletics through a period of unprecedented growth and competitive success. He has made several transformative hires, including bringing hometown favorite Jeff Brohm back to lead the football program in December 2022, appointing Pat Kelsey as head men’s basketball coach in March 2024, and promoting Dan Meske to head coach of the nationally prominent volleyball program in January 2025. Under Heird’s direction, the 2024–25 aca- demic year was one of the most successful in UofL history. Eleven teams were nationally ranked, and 10 programs reached NCAA post- season play. The football team won the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and achieved back-to- back nine-win seasons for the first time since 2014. The baseball team reached the College World Series for the sixth time in school his- tory. Men’s basketball returned to the NCAA Tournament and reached its first-ever ACC Championship game, while the All-Girl cheer squad captured its 11th consecutive national title. Louisville also hosted the 2024 NCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship at the KFC Yum! Center, where the Cardinals made their second appearance in the nation- al title match. Academically, Louisville Athletics has thrived under Heird’s leadership. The depart- ment achieved a 96% graduation rate in 2024–25, its highest ever, and maintained a department-wide GPA of 3.0 or higher for 29 consecutive semesters. Ten programs earned perfect APR scores in each of Heird’s first three years. Heird has also been a driving force behind major capital projects and fundraising efforts. He secured a $41 million naming rights deal to rename Cardinal Stadium to L&N Stadium— one of the largest gifts in school history—and raised $4 million to launch the Angel’s Envy Bourbon Club. He also completed Denny Crum Hall, a state-of-the-art residence facil- ity, and secured $1 million for enhancements to Jim Patterson Stadium. A forward-thinking leader, Heird has priori- tized student-athlete experience and innova- tion. He expanded the Elevate NIL Program, improved alignment with 502Circle—the official NIL collective of Louisville Athletics— and partnered with industry expert Andrew Brandt to develop a revenue-sharing model set to launch in summer 2025. He also led a groundbreaking partnership with UofL Health, making Louisville the ACC leader in mental health resources by adding 10 new profes- sionals focused on mental health, sports per- formance, and sports science. Before becoming Athletic Director, Heird served as Louisville’s Deputy Athletic Direc- tor beginning in April 2019, overseeing key sports and operational areas including foot- ball, men’s basketball, baseball, and capital projects. He previously held senior leader- ship roles at Villanova University, where he served as Senior Associate Athletics Director/ Chief Athletics Operating Officer and Associ- ate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Finance. Heird began his career at Louisville in 2007 and played a pivotal role in the design and construction of several major facilities, including the Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Soccer Stadium, Ulmer Softball Stadium expansion, and the Thorntons Academic Center of Excel- lence. He also managed numerous NCAA and ACC championship events hosted by UofL. A 2002 graduate of Mississippi College, Heird was a standout student-athlete in cross country, track & field, and football. He was the 2001 American Southwest Conference 800- meter champion and an academic all-confer- ence honoree every semester. He earned his MBA from the University of Louisville in 2009. Heird is married to the former Abbey Wool- ley. They reside in Louisville with their two chil- dren, Hadley and Gus.
