has be- come a source of pride and accomplishment in the Cardinals’ clubhouse. Awarded to a player who had an outstanding performance or made a key play in a Cards’ victory, “The Shirt” was an honor coach Dan McDonnell introduced to the program in 2007. Prior to each game, a new shirt hangs in the Cards’ dugout with a number on the back of it representing the team’s next win. Following the game, McDonnell awards the shirt to his key contributor for that Louisville victory. In the first season of “The Shirt”, the Cards awarded 47 of them for their 47 wins and the players earned another 41 in 2008. In 2009, the UofL players equaled the 2007 total with 47 more shirts, while the 2010 season ended with a then school record of 50 wins. The Cardinals set a school record in 2013 with 51 wins, before eclipsing that mark with 53 victories in 2017. UofL added 51 more wins to the total in 2019. 5-5 record under Dr. John Heldman Jr. Granted it was one of just two seasons that Heldman didn’t post a winning mark (the other being an 11-11 mark in 1959), but there was nothing on the surface that lead anyone to believe it was anything but ordinary. Well, upon further inspection, this was the first official season of post World War II baseball at UofL. In 1943 non-collegiate exhibitions were scheduled against city league teams consisting of local businessmen and workers. In 1944, there were 450 plus naval trainees stationed on the campus in a V-12 indoctrination program and varsity sports were suspended, with the apparent exception of men’s basketball. The navy hardball league was organized on an “informal intercollegiate basis”, pitting teams based on barracks or companies against one another on a one game per week basis. The 1945 team played a season very similar to the 1943 squad. In 1946 Bob Friedlander (front row, third from left) lead the team with a .350 batting average. Catcher Steve Click (middle row, third from left) lead the team in Purple Hearts with two. If today’s student athlete feels the burden of class work and performing on the field is too much, imagine serving your country in a time of war. Click was injured once by shell fragments and again when shot by a sniper. According to The Cardinal, two of the team members were prisoners of the Germans. Third baseman Jimmy Miller (middle row, fourth from right) was captured on January 6, 1945 in Stras- burg, Germany. A member of the 7th Army, he was held prisoner until he was rescued by the 14th armored division on May 12th. Second baseman E.C. Thirlwell (middle row, second from right) was in the 1st Army, and was captured on December 19, 1944, during the “Battle of the Bulge.” He was liberated by the Russians on April 22nd and the American 83rd Infantry Division arrived on May 5th, the outfit Steve Click was in. A number of others were in the service, including first baseman Bob “Sonny Tufts” Crady (back row, fourth from left). Crady was a mem- ber of the 513th Parachute Infantry Battalion, and by virtue of leading the Fort Benning base- ball league in batting, he had the opportunity to have his picture taken with starlet Jane Russell. Hauss Jr., coach John Walker and captain Thomas Walker, gathered the University of Louisville baseball team and on April 3, they took to the diamond for the first time in school history. That was more than a century ago. Now, both World Wars and the Great Depression wiped out a handful of seasons, so there have not been 100 seasons of baseball, but 2008 marked the 101st anniversary of that first team. The 1909 team ended the season with a 3-2 record, while also playing in 12 exhibition games. Back in 1924 under Head Coach Fred Enke, UofL faced of with rival Cincinnati for the first time, splitting a home and home set. The following sea- son the Battle of the Bluegrass Nines made its debut. In 1927 the Cardinals won the S.I.A.A. Cham- pionship under coach Tom King, going 8-1, and saw Fred Koster hit for the first cycle in school his- tory against Western on April 22 (four others have since accomplished the feat). A frustrated C.V. “Red” Money and his charges suffered through an 0-7 slate in 1935. It only took Dr. “Jolly” John Heldman two sea- sons to recapture the S.I.A.A. Title, going 10-2-1 in 1938, and he repeated in 1939 with an 11-1 mark. In 1944, the V-12 Naval Indoctrination program halted varsity sports with the apparent exception of men’s basketball. On April 18, 1947, the season opened with 42-1 dismantling of Georgetown College that was called prior to the bottom of the fifth because of the score, the most lopsided in school history. Bob Badger tossed the first no-hitter in school history on May 13, 1949 at WKU. Behind Steve Riley and Tom Lovell, the 1957 Cardinals went 17-0 for what many consider among the greatest teams in school history. The next season a 10-4 win over UK on May 15 marked the first night game at Parkway Field, a mere 30 years before Wrigley played night baseball. UofL joined the Missouri Valley Conference in 1963, and Heldman Jr. coached his final game on May 27, 1966 - a 15-4 win over Kentucky Southern - he won his last seven games and was 13-4 in his 28th and final season. Mario Cheppo, Harold Adams and Dale Orem, who each made a profound impact on the athletic department in other capacities that placed all of the them in the UofL Athletic Hall of Fame, spent time as head coach of the Cards. Jim Zerilla was 1975 MVC Coach of the Year with the likes of Jim LaFountain, Mike Shields and Chuck Schupp on the roster. Zerilla would later serve a stint as the pitching coach nearly 30 years later. The following sea- son Louisville made the jump to the Metro con- ference, and in 1981 John Boles became skipper after coaching at St. Xavier College. He would later lead the Florida Marlins. The 1991 squad under first-year head coach Gene Baker blasted 125 home runs over the green monster at Parkway to lead the nation and earn the moniker of the Over-the-Wall gang. In 1996, Lelo Prado ushered in two new eras when the Cardinals moved into Conference USA, and directed the team to the first regional in school history in 2002 when they advanced to Atlanta. With two-time national coach of the year award winner at the helm in Dan McDonnell, the Cardinals have made five College World Series appearances and earned 13 NCAA Championship berths in 15 full seasons. Having won 10 conference regular season championships in the last 13 seasons, includ- ing five ACC Atlantic Division championships, the Louisville baseball program continues to assert itself as one of the nation’s elite. 1909 Louisville Baseball Team Dr. John Heldman I n 1876, the National League chose Louisville to be the host city for one of the charter members of what we now call the senior circuit for two seasons. The Lou- isville Grays gave way to the Eclipse of the American Association, established in 1882, changed over to the Colonels in 1885 and spent another eight years in the National League. Moses Fleetwood Walker made his major league baseball debut on May 1, 1884 versus the Louisville Eclipse as the first African-American to play pro baseball at the Major League level. Around that time, Bud Hillerich and his father began turning out bats for players on the Louisville team. Their continued success and relationship with Frank Bradsby blossomed into Hillerich and Bradsby, or what is known today as the preeminent manufac- turer of baseball bats, Louisville Slugger. Teams in Louisville played home games at a number of venues. Louisville Base- ball Park is a former baseball ground that was home to the Grays of the National League from 1876 to 1877. The ground was on a piece of property that was later developed into an upper-class neighborhood known as St. James Court. There were two Eclipse Parks in Louisville. The first ground was home to the Colonels from 1882 to 1893, with competitive games dating back to as early as 1874. The second Eclipse Park was also the home of the Colonels from 1893 to 1899 and was where Hall of Famer Honus Wagner made his Major League debut on July 19, 1897. Both parks were located at the corner of 7th and Kentucky. The American Association’s Louisville Colonels played the first game there on April 23, 1902 in front of 6,000 fans. The UofL baseballers played a portion of their games there before it burned to the ground on November 20, 1922. Parkway Field opened in May of 1923 and was quickly recognized as the finest minor league ballpark in the nation. Lights were installed in 1932, and Jackie Robinson played a professional game at Parkway as a member of the Montreal Royals in 1946. Pictured here on September 9, 1934, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Grover Cleveland Alex- ander, Satchel Paige and Pee Wee Reese were among the many stars who took the field. It was host to three Negro League teams as well; the White Sox, Black Caps and Buckeyes. The permanent seats were torn down in 1961, and it became home to the Cards for years to come. On October 24, 1928, New York Yankee stars Lou Gehrig (fifth from left, back row) and Babe Ruth (to Gehrig’s left) played in a benefit game at Parkway Field, weeks after they won the World Series, batting a combined 16-for- 27 with seven homers. Ruth first visited Louisville on June 2, 1924, when in the ninth inning, according to the Courier-Journal’s Bruce Dudley “He socked the gosh- awfullest ball that has ever been croaked in the history of the game in Louisville. The vehemence of this blow stunned a crowd that had come to the park in expectancy of staggering wallops, but no crash of such heft had been imagined by anyone as pos- sible for a human being, but he hit that ball inhumanly.” The famous green left field wall was torn down on January 14, 2005 with some of the bricks going to Jim Patterson Stadium. Professional teams called Cardi- nal Stadium home from 1982-1999 before Louisville Slugger Field, the home of the AAA Louisville Bats opened. The state-of-the-art ballpark opened in 2000 to rave reviews on the river front in downtown Louisville. Now Jim Patterson Stadium places another jewel in the crown of Lou- isville’s great history with America’s Pastime.
