< Previous18 @KentuckyMBB From Press Row UK Hosts Western Kentucky The Kentucky men’s basketball team will host Western Kentucky on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Rupp Arena in place of the original- ly scheduled rivalry game vs. Louisville. The game will remain on ESPN. UK’s game vs. Louisville was postponed Monday morning due to positive COVID-19 results within the UofL program. Officials from Kentucky and Louisville will monitor opportunities in which the teams can re- schedule the annual rivalry game. With an open date, Kentucky and West- ern Kentucky will meet for the first time since the 2012 NCAA Tournament. UK Athletics is working on a charitable component from the game that will provide support for those who were affected by the tornadoes. “We have now dealt with COVID-related issues the last two scheduled games. I am very appreciative of the University of North Carolina and Western Kentucky University for working with us quickly to complete our schedule,” said Mitch Barnhart, UK Director of Athletics. “I know our fans were looking forward to the game with our intrastate rival. In lieu of that game, Western Kentucky and the University of Kentucky will come togeth- er to provide some relief for our state as we work through the tragedy of the last couple of weeks in Western Kentucky.” The Hilltoppers are off to an 8-4 start with wins over Ole Miss, 71-48, and Louis- ville, 89-79. WKU has four players averag- ing double figures, led by Jairus Hamilton at 16.5 points per game. Dayvion McKnight is averaging 14.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Center Jamarion Sharp, who stands at 7-5, leads WKU on the boards with 7.8 rebounds per game and averages nearly five blocks per contest. Sahvir Wheeler Tabbed SEC Player of the Week Kentucky guard Sahvir Wheeler has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Play- er of the Week after his dominating per- formance in a win over North Carolina on Saturday. Wheeler scored a season-high 26 points and added eight assists and a season-high four steals in the 98-69 CBS Sports Classic victory over the Tar Heels. It is the second weekly honor of the sea- son for the Wildcats. TyTy Washington Jr. was named the SEC Freshman of the Week earli- er this season. This marks Wheeler’s second career accolade from the league office. He was named the SEC Freshman of the Week in December of 2019 while at Georgia. Wheeler was also named the National Player of the Week by Andy Katz of March Madness. After going 0 for 5 with just two assists in UK’s loss to No- tre Dame last week, Wheeler bounced back in a big way de- spite the Wildcats being forced to change opponents less than 48 hours before they were set to play. Wheeler led the Wildcats to a 98-69 result, the second-larg- est margin of victory in series history. Wheeler totaled 26 points, just one shy of his career high, on 12 of 15 from the field for an 80% rate. Wheeler’s 12 made field goals were a career best. Wheeler also dished out eight assists, marking his fifth game with at least eight dimes this season. He impacted the game on both ends of the floor with a season-high four steals to help UK to 14 fast-break points. Saturday’s game was the sixth time this season Wheeler has scored in double figures, but the first since scoring 12 against North Florida on Nov. 26. According to Big Blue Histo- ry, he is the first player in school history with at least 26 points, at least eight assists and at least four steals in a game. His 26 points were the best by any UK player this season. Kentucky has dominated the weekly SEC awards with John Calipari at the helm. UK has won more weekly SEC honors (112) than any other school during the Calipari era, in- cluding 86 SEC Freshman of the Week hon- ors and 26 SEC Player of the Week awards. ‘Kentucky United’ Telethon Raises More than $3 Million for Tornado Relief Big Blue Nation proved last week that its passion goes far beyond just the athletic fields. The University of Kentucky athletic de- partment, along with JMI Sports and WLEX- TV, produced a “Kentucky United for Tor- nado Relief” telethon that helped generate more than $3 million (with matching funds) to assist victims of the devastating tornadoes that ravaged through the state last week. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross to aid in the relief efforts in Kentucky and to benefit the victims of the catastrophic event. With donations still coming in at the con- clusion of the telethon, the tabulation had reached $3,031,241 at that point. Through Wednesday, it had surpassed $3.7 million with hope to surpass $4 million by the week- end. Donations can continue to be sent in to redcross.org/donate/cm/wlextv-pub.html/ (site will be active through Dec. 19) or by mailing a check to the American Red Cross (Attn: Kentucky Tornadoes; 1450 Newton Pike, Lexington, KY 40511). Every head coach who was in Lexington on Tuesday volunteered his or her time. The coaches teamed with UK student-athletes, who took time off during exam week to han- dle the multitude of telephone calls. “On an incredible night, the Big Blue Na- tion and all of Kentucky continue to show the special bond that exists throughout the people of the Commonwealth,” said Mitch Barnhart, UK Director of Athletics. “As re- lief organizations and volunteers continue to help rebuild the lives of so many, we are thankful to all who contributed to the tele- thon, the volunteers who made it happen, the American Red Cross, WLEX and JMI Sports. When you raise more than $3 million in four hours through the hearts of wonderful people who care so deeply about those who are hurting, it’s really special. “We will continue to find ways to help rebuild, restore, heal and return stronger than before. Our hearts extend this hope and promise to the people of Western Kentucky.”167 W Main Street, Lexington | @LockboxLex | LockboxLex.com LEXINGTONLocated at GLOW BIG BLUE Just blocks from Rupp Arena, we’re the perfect destination for your pre-game dinner or post-game drinks.
