< PreviousKENTUCKY 68 @UKFootball L ooking to continue its high standard of success after earning its third-straight po- dium finish at last year’s NCAA Champion- ships, the University of Kentucky rifle team began its 2023-24 season in impressive style earlier this month. Several athletes posted career-high num- bers in the season opener vs. Morehead State, earning a 4727-4661 dual-match in early October. The Wildcats posted a strong 2352 in smallbore to start the match, which is one of the highest smallbore team scores on the young season nationally. Kentucky, which has won three of the last five NCAA Championships with team titles in 2018, 2021 and 2022, is set to compete all over North America in 2023-24. After a competitive schedule from October to February, the Wildcats will compete in the Great America Rifle Conference Champion- ships in late February and hope to qualify for their 30th NCAA Championship appear- ance in March. “We were very excited to start the season strong a few weeks back and look forward to more good performances as the season progresses,” said head coach Harry Mul- lins, who is entering his 36th season with the program. “Like we talked about last season, there are so many good collegiate rifle teams across the country and you re- ally have to compete at a high level ev- ery day if you want to have a chance at holding the ultimate trophy in March. I think this schedule really prepares our student-athletes for that championship grind. Coach Cat and I cannot wait to get them back in the range soon and get to work.” This weekend, UK travels for the first time to Navy on in Annapolis, Maryland. Novem- ber will be busy for the Wildcats as UK will host Akron and Ole Miss on Nov. 3 and 5, respectively, followed by a Nov. 11 dual match with Memphis at home. Kentucky concludes the fall season by traveling to Fairbanks, Alaska for the second consecu- tive season, competing against Alaska-Fair- banks and Akron on Nov. 18 and 19. As the calendar turns to 2024, Kentucky will travel to West Point, New York to com- pete against Army and Nebraska on Jan. 13 and 14. The following weekend, UK will travel to Murray, Kentucky for the annual Wi- throw Invitational. The Wildcats annual dual match with West Virginia will be Feb. 10 in Morgantown, West Virginia this season. Postseason competition begins Feb. 17 as UK will host a NCAA Qualifier at the UK Rifle Range. The GARC Championships will be Feb. 24-25 in West Point, N.Y., with the NCAA Championships March 8-9 in Mor- gantown, W.Va. All home matches will be held inside the UK Rifle Range, which is inside Barker Hall. Matches normally follow a similar schedule with sighting and prep for smallbore begin- ning at 8 a.m. ET. Spectators are invited to watch smallbore scores up in Barker Hall and enjoy free breakfast during the first part of the relay. The range will be open to spec- tators for air rifle. Admission to all home matches is free. Kentucky had a solid 2022-23 season, finishing third overall at the 2023 NCAA Na- tional Championships. It marked the 22nd time the Wildcats have finished top five at the national event. UK has finished on the podium in each of the last three national championships, winning the title back-to- back in 2021 and 2022. UK has won three of the last five titles overall and were the un- defeated favorites in 2020 when the cham- pionships were canceled due to COVID-19. UK’s four national titles is the third most in NCAA history. Prior to the NCAA Championships last season, Kentucky won its fourth straight GARC Regular-Season Championships. It was the first time in program history that UK has won four straight regular-season cham- pionships and it was the program’s 10th regular-season title overall. All 10 titles have come under Mullins. UK returns a majority of its 2022-23 ros- ter, including last year’s team leader in small- bore and air rifle average and three-time first- team All-America Sofia Ceccarello. Cecca- rello won gold at the GARC Championships in air rifle but did not compete in the NCAA Championships due to a prior international obligation. Fellow sophomore AJ Hotko and Martin Voss are also returning, along with juniors Allison Buesseler, Kayla Kalenza and Tori Kopelen. Fifth-year seniors Emmie Sell- ers and Jaden Thompson anchor the return- ees and are poised for strong seasons. The Wildcats added two rookie stars to this year’s team in Braden Peiser and Emi- ly Marne. Both come to Lexington with a length list of accomplishments and are ex- pected to have strong freshman campaigns. The NCAA & SEC rules were developed to ensure those members of the institution’s staff, student- athletes and other individuals or groups representing the institution’s ath- letics interests comply with the NCAA rules and maintain the highest standard of ethical conduct. PRINCIPLES OF RULES COMPLIANCE The Athletics Compliance Office (ACO) works to identify and reduce areas of risk within the athletics program that could neg- atively impact the University of Kentucky. If a problem arises, it is the responsibility of the ACO to determine how the problem oc- curred, how it could have been prevented and how to reduce the chances of it occur- ring in the future. The two main functions of the ACO are to educate and monitor. The ACO meets regularly with coaches and student-athletes to provide information and materials on the applications of the com- plexities of the NCAA bylaws, and at the same time provide as much information as possible to the University of Kentucky com- munity. The staff also monitors the functions of the athletics department that are governed by NCAA legislation. PRINCIPLES OF INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY The institution’s responsibility for the conduct of its intercollegiate athletics pro- gram includes responsibility for the actions of its staff members and for the actions of any other individual or organization en- gaged in activities promoting the athletics interests of the institution. The NCAA defines an individual as a rep- resentative of athletics interests or a “boost- er” or “donor” if he or she: • Has participated in or is a member of an agency or organization promoting UK’s intercollegiate athletics program; • Makes or has made a donation to any of the UK men’s or women’s athletics pro- grams; • Is assisting or has been requested by the UK Athletics Department Staff to assist in the recruitment of prospects (which he or she is NOT permitted to do); • Is assisting or has been requested to Pro- vide benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families (which he or she is NOT permitted to do); • Has been involved otherwise in promoting the UK athletics pro- gram. Remember, a rep- resentative of athletics Interests is responsible for making the Univer- sity of Kentucky’s ACO aware of any potential violations of NCAA rules he or she knows have occurred. According to the NCAA, once an in- dividual has been iden- tified as an athletics representative, he or she retains this identity forever, even if that person no longer contributes to the athletics program. NAME, IMAGE & LIKENESS Pursuant to the adoption of Kentucky re- vised statutes 164.6941 through 164.6951, Kentucky student-athletes are now per- mitted to use their name, image, and like- ness for purposes of compensation. Below are a few key highlights for donors/fans to be aware of: • SA is permitted receive NIL compensa- tion provided there are services rendered by the SA (quid pro quo). • All NIL deals must be submitted seven business days prior to the activity occurring and must be approved within threes busi- ness days by the institution; • Failure to disclose NIL deals to UK may result in violations of Kentucky State Law and NCAA rules, which in turn will affect a SA’s eligibility. • Prospects may not receive compen- sation from anyone in exchange for com- mitting to or signing a scholarship with the University of Kentucky. • Donor’s may not have contact with prospective student-athletes, including to negotiate an NIL deal; • SA must receive fair market value for services rendered. • It is permissible for a donor/booster to enter into a genuine NIL agreement with a current SA, so long as the agreement is not a payment, provision or promise of any other consideration or benefits. • UK marks are not permitted to be used for SA NIL activities UNLESS approved by UK in advance. • UK, including but not limited to ath- letics staff and coaches, are not permitted to provide, arrange or negotiate NIL deals for SA’s. • UK is permitted to put you into con- tact with a current SA if there is interest in a NIL deal – UK encourages contacting SA’s directly via their social media accounts. Failure to adhere to these regulations create NCAA violations that may result in a SA or PSA to be ineligible for intercollegiate competition. In addition, it may affect your standing as a donor with UK. To learn more, visit https://ukathletics. com/NIL STUDENT-ATHLETE EMPLOYMENT In addition to NIL, SA’s are also able to obtain employment opportunities to earn extra funds or gain invaluable experience in a field in which they look to have a career. SA’s are permitted to work provided: • They are only paid for work performed; • They are paid at the going rate for ser- vices in the locale. • The job is registered with the ACO.
