< Previous18 @KentuckyMBB From Press Row UK, Southern Unite for Inaugural Unity Series The inaugural Unity Series between the Kentucky men's basketball team and mem- bers from the Southwestern Athletic Confer- ence tips off tonight when the Wildcats host Southern in Rupp Arena. The game will be the first in five consec- utive seasons of matchups vs. institutions from the SWAC – which is made up of historically black college and universities – but the game is just one piece of the an- nual meetings. The games will seek to raise awareness of the missions of the HBCUs and to raise funds to provide opportunities for students at their institutions. This year's programming featured sev- eral events that provided educational op- portunities for the teams and students at the two institutions, networking opportunities and community engagement. The week began with a joint trip the National Underground Railroad Freedom Museum in Cincinnati. Players, coaches and staff from both UK and Southern met at the Freedom Museum and received an educational orientation and guided tour. The museum was established in 2004 to reveal stories of freedom's heroes – from the era of the Underground Railroad to contemporary times – and to challenge and inspire people to take courageous steps for freedom. Kentucky Welcomes Southern to Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center Kentucky matches up tonight with South- ern in the Inaugural Unity Series. The game will mark the return of Sean Woods, who played at UK during the 1988-92 seasons. As one of the "Unforgettables," Woods helped lead the Wildcats to the 1992 East Regional finals. Woods is in his fourth season as head coach of the Jaguars. Southern is 3-5 this sea- son. The Jaguars are led by Tyrone Lyons who averages 14.3 points per game and Brion Whitley (13.5 ppg.). Damien Sears is South- ern's leading rebounder at 6.5 rebounds per game. This is the first meeting between Ken- tucky and Southern. Last Time Out Against Central Michigan When Kentucky last hit the hardwood eight days ago against Central Michigan, the Cats hit their first six shots from the floor and 11 of their first 12, on their way to a 25-5 lead less than seven minutes into the game. It started with a TyTy Washington Jr. bas- ket. After CMU took it's only lead of the game at 3-2, it was Washington again, fol- lowed by a Kellan Grady layup and a Keion Brooks Jr. three-pointer, making it 9-2. CMU would cut it to 9-5 on a Jermaine Jackson Jr. basket before the Cats scored 16 in a row to essentially put the game away with 13:25 still remaining in the first half. It wasn't just one player who was feeling it early. Kentucky's first 11 baskets were made each of the five starters (Brooks, Grady, Oscar Tshiebwe, Washington and Sahvir Wheeler). Kentucky would go on to win 85-57 over former UK assistant coach Tony Barbee and his Chippewas. What turned out to be an easy victory can be directly attributed to the fast start. "We came out a little nervous," Barbee said. "Attribute some of that to them, their pressure. We dug ourselves a big hole." As for Kentucky head coach John Calipa- ri, he continues to see glimpses of just how good his team can be when clicking on all cylinders. "How good can we play?," Calipari said. "There were stretches today when we were really good." After the hot start, Kentucky would cool down a bit, making only nine of its last 26 shots from the floor in the first half. Still, the Cats built a 51-25 lead through 20 minutes. Barbee has now seen Kentucky and for- mer No. 1 Gonzaga this season. When he was asked, in Monday's postgame press con- ference, if UK was in the same league as the Zags, Barbee gave a definitive answer. "100 percent. They're as physically im- posing as Gonzaga is," Barbee said. "They're on Gonzaga's level." The University of Kentucky and Southern University men’s basketball teams toured the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati as a part of the Unity Series.167 W Main Street, Lexington | @LockboxLex | LockboxLex.com LEXINGTONLocated at GLOW BIG BLUE Just blocks from Rupp Arena, we’re the perfect destination for your pre-game dinner or post-game drinks.
