< Previous18 @KentuckyMBB From Press Row UK Begins SEC Play Tonight Against Missouri Kentucky begins SEC play tonight as they welcome the Missouri Tigers to Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center. Tonight is the confer- ence opening game for both teams. Missouri comes to Lexington with a 6-6 overall record. The Tigers have two players averaging double figures, led by Kobe Brown at 14.8 points per game. Amari Davis is averaging 10.4 points. Brown also leads Missouri with 8.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots per game. Missouri de- feated Kentucky, 75-70, in their last meeting. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 13-2. Oscar Tshiebwe Breaks Rupp Arena Rebounding Record As teammate Kellan Grady strung to- gether long jumpers, Oscar Tshiebwe outre- bounded Western Kentucky all by himself on a record-breaking night that supplanted Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal. Grady made six 3-pointers and scored a season-high 23 points, Tshiebwe grabbed a Rupp Arena-record 28 rebounds and No. 20 Kentucky used an 18-2 second-half run to blow out the Hilltoppers 95-60. ‘’Coach wanted me to shoot, my team- mates (were) pressing me to shoot the ball and make shots,’’ said Grady, who struggled from outside just a few games ago. ‘’And ulti- mately, I believed in myself as well.’’ TyTy Washington Jr. added 20 points and Jacob Toppin scored 12 as the Wildcats (9-2) routed their second consecutive sub- stitute opponent. The in-state Hilltoppers (8-5) were added Monday after the post- ponement of Kentucky’s scheduled matchup against archrival Louisville because of pos- itive COVID-19 tests within the Cardinals’ program. Josh Anderson scored 18 points and Cam- ron Justice had 13 for WKU, which was com- ing off an 82-72 victory over Louisville. Kentucky’s schedule switch also required adjusting to 7-foot-5 WKU center Jamarion Sharp - college basketball’s tallest player - which it did behind Grady’s outside shooting and Tshiebwe’s dominance on the boards. Grady went 6 of 9 from long range and 7 of 10 overall for his best performance since transferring from Davidson. Tshiebwe scored 14 points and topped his previous Ken- tucky-player Rupp Arena mark of 20 boards against Robert Morris midway through the second half. His 21st rebound tied O’Neal’s record with LSU against the Wildcats on Feb. 15, 1990, with the 22nd following soon after and then some. Tshiebwe flirted with 30 before being pulled with 2:06 remaining as the Wildcats owned the glass 50-27. He acknowledged several rounds of cheers before sitting down for the final min- utes. ‘’That’s amazing, to get 28 rebounds in a game,’’ the nation’s re- bounding leader said. ‘’It is a blessing and I just want to give all the glory to God because I don’t think I can do that on my own. It is something great, you work harder and ev- erything is going to be so easy.’’ WKU pulled to 37- 33 early in the sec- ond half before Grady scored 11 points during the decisive run that broke open the game. Kentucky made 38 of 68 from the field (56%) and held the ‘Toppers to 33% shoot- ing in the first meeting between the schools since its 2012 NCAA championship run. ‘’Sometimes you’ve just got to say the oth- er team was better,’’ WKU coach Rick Stansbury said. ‘’And they were better in every area. Again, I don’t have any answers for everything they did. But I just know when they play like that, they were the best team in America today.’’ ‘Kentucky United’ Telethon Raises More than $3 Million for Tornado Relief Big Blue Nation proved that its passion goes far beyond just the athletic fields. The University of Kentucky athletic depart- ment, along with JMI Sports and WLEX-TV, produced a “Kentucky United for Tornado Relief” telethon that helped generate more than $3 million (with matching funds) to assist victims of the devastating tornadoes that rav- aged through the state earlier this month. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross to aid in the relief efforts in Kentucky and to benefit the victims of the catastrophic event. With donations still coming in at the con- clusion of the telethon, the tabulation had reached $3,031,241. Through Monday, with the online portal donation remaining opening through December, the number was nearing $4.5 million. Donations can continue to be sent in to redcross.org/donate/cm/wlextv-pub. html/ or by mailing a check to the American Red Cross (Attn: Kentucky Tornadoes; 1450 Newton Pike, Lexington, KY 40511). Every head coach who was in Lexington during the broadcast of the telethon volun- teered his or her time. The coaches teamed with UK student-athletes, who took time off during exam week to handle the multitude of telephone calls. “On an incredible night, the Big Blue Na- tion and all of Kentucky continue to show the special bond that exists throughout the people of the Commonwealth,” said Mitch Barnhart, UK Director of Athletics. “As relief organiza- tions and volunteers continue to help rebuild the lives of so many, we are thankful to all who contributed to the telethon, the volunteers who made it happen, the American Red Cross, WLEX and JMI Sports. When you raise more than $3 million in four hours through the hearts of wonderful people who care so deeply about those who are hurting, it’s really special. “We will continue to find ways to help rebuild, restore, heal and return stronger than before. Our hearts extend this hope and promise to the people of Western Kentucky.”167 W Main Street, Lexington | @LockboxLex | LockboxLex.com LEXINGTONLocated at GLOW BIG BLUE Just blocks from Rupp Arena, we’re the perfect destination for your pre-game dinner or post-game drinks.
