Reeves has certainly lived up to that ex- pectation, scoring in double figures in 15 of Kentucky’s 16 games, including on Wednes- day night when he posted a game-high 27 points as No. 8/10 Kentucky beat Mississippi State 90-77 inside Rupp Arena. It was the eighth game this season in which Reeves has scored at least 20 points, the second in a row and the fourth such game in UK’s last six contests. Kentucky (13-3, 3-1 Southeastern Con- ference) got 16 points from Rob Dillingham, who added four rebounds and four assists. Tre Mitchell made all five of his field goal attempts, including his only three, and all four of his free throws on his way to 15 points. Aaron Bradshaw added 11 points and six rebounds for the Cats. UK head coach John Calipari knows that it’s tough to win each and every night in the SEC. “That was a good team that we beat to- day,” Calipari said.“Every game in this league is like a rock fight. Kids were ready today.” Kentucky trailed 5-2 early before scoring 13 in a row to lead 15-5. Reed Sheppard came off the bench to spark the run, handing out three assists in one minute of action. Mississippi State responded with back- to-back threes from Shawn Jones Jr., cutting the UK lead to 15-11. Kentucky answered by scoring 12 of the next 17 points, sparked by eight points from Dillingham, to lead 27-16. MSU scored the next four before the Cats went on a 13-2 run, including nine in a row, to grow the lead to 40-22. The teams played even for the remainder of the half and the Cats took a 47-29 lead into the break. Reeves led all scorers with 16 points in the first 20 minutes. Mississippi State opened the second half with an 14-2 run to cut the UK lead to 49- 43 less than three minutes into the half. UK responded with a 9-1 run to re-establish a double-digit lead, 58-44. Kentucky would hold that double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, leading by as many as 18 in the second half before settling for the 13-point win. John Calipari Captures Win No. 400 as UK's Head Coach Kentucky head coach John Calipari claimed his 400th win as UK's head coach on Jan. 17, 2024 in a 90-77 victory over Mis- sissippi State. With that win, Calipari became the third-fastest active head coach to 400 wins at a single program, trailing only Bill Self (Kansas - 484 games) and Mark Few (Gon- zaga - 499 games). Calipari needed just 516 games to reach the 400-win plateau, and in Division I history he reached that milestone in the eighth-fewest games. Adolph Rupp in just 477 games was the fastest to achieve the feat.) Kentucky Honoring 1984 Final Four Team The University of Kentucky Athletics De- partment will celebrate the 1983-1984 men’s basketball team, which advanced to the NCAA Final Four and swept the Southeastern Conference regular season and tournament titles, this weekend with festivities surround- ing today’s game vs. Georgia inside Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center. The ceremony will take place during halftime. Head coach Joe B. Hall’s 1983-84 Wild- cats went 29-5 overall (14-4 SEC), advanced to the Final Four, finished the season ranked No. 3 nationally, and won the Southeastern Conference regular season and SEC Tourna- ment titles. The season began on Nov. 26 with a 65-44 home win over No. 6-ranked Louis- ville, the first of 12 straight victories to be- gin the campaign. The Wildcats took a break from league play in January with a 74-67 home win over No. 4-ranked Houston. UK wrapped the regular season and clinched the league crown with a pair of home victories over Ole Miss and LSU. The SEC Tournament, held at Vander- bilt, remains the most closely contested in league history as seven of the nine games were decided by six points or less. Fitting- ly, the championship game against Auburn went down to a final dramatic shot. Tied at 49, a jumper by Kenny “Sky” Walker hit the rim, bounced high, landed on the rim again, then crawled into the net as the buzz- er sounded. A No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Kentucky received a first-round bye, then defeated Brigham Young in a second-round game in Birmingham. Rupp Arena was the host site of the Mideast Regional, where UK defeated Louisville and Illinois to advance to the Final Four. Played in Seattle, the Wild- cats fell to Georgetown in the semifinal as the Hoyas went on to win the national championship. Sam Bowie, who became the second selection in the 1984 NBA Draft, was an All-American and an All-SEC selection, av- eraging 10.5 points and a team-high 9.2 re- bounds per game. He was also named to the All-NCAA Regional team. Melvin Turpin was a consensus All-Amer- ican, AII-NCAA Regional Team, AlI-SEC First Team and AIl-SEC Tournament honoree. He led the Wildcats in scoring with 15.2 points per game. Walker earned All-SEC rec- ognition during his sophomore season while averaging 12.4 points per game. Senior Jim Master tallied 9.6 points per game. Dicky Beal was the NCAA Regional Most Outstand- ing Player and paced the team in assists with 4.4 contest. )Thank You to Our CORNERSTONE PARTNERSNEKENTUCKY BASKETBALL 18 @KentuckyMBB Around the SEC Around the Country 2023-24 SEC Standings and Statistics Team SEC Overall Home Road Auburn 4-0 15-2 9-0 2-1 Alabama 4-0 12-5 8-1 2-1 Kentucky 3-1 13-3 9-1 2-1 Tennessee 3-1 13-4 9-0 2-2 Georgia 3-1 13-4 10-1 3-0 LSU 3-1 11-6 8-2 1-2 Ole Miss 2-2 15-2 11-0 2-2 South Carolina 2-2 14-3 9-1 2-2 Mississippi State 1-3 12-5 6-2 0-3 Florida 1-3 11-6 7-1 0-3 Arkansas 1-3 10-7 8-2 0-2 Texas A&M 1-3 10-7 6-2 2-3 Missouri 0-4 8-9 6-4 2-3 Vanderbilt 0-4 5-12 5-6 0-3 Scoring Player-Team ...................................................................PPG Mark Sears, ALA ............................................................19.6 Wade Taylor IV, TAMU ...................................................19.5 Antonio Reeves, UK ......................................................19.4 Dalton Knecht, UT ........................................................18.5 Tramon Mark, TAMU .....................................................17.8 Rebounding Player-Team ...................................................................RPG Andersson Garcia, TAMU ................................................8.8 Johni Broome, AUB .........................................................8.6 Tyrese Samuel, UF ...........................................................8.6 Henry Coleman III, TAMU ...............................................8.0 Tre Mitchell, UK ..............................................................7.8 Assists Player-Team ...................................................................APG Zakai Zeigler, UT .............................................................5.0 Zyon Pullin, UF ...............................................................4.9 Ta'Lon Cooper, SC ...........................................................4.2 Reed Sheppard, UK .........................................................4.2 Rob Dillingham, UK ........................................................4.1 Steals Player-Team ...................................................................SPG Reed Sheppard, UK .........................................................2.5 Cameron Matthews, MISS ST ...........................................2.4 Jordan Wright, LSU ..........................................................2.4 Wade Taylor IV, TAMU .....................................................2.4 Matthew Murrell, MISS ....................................................2.1 Blocks Player-Team ...................................................................BPG Jamarion Sharp, MISS ......................................................2.9 Johni Broome, AUB .........................................................1.9 Jonas Aidoo, UT ..............................................................1.6 Aidan Shaw, MIZZOU .....................................................1.6 Grant Nelson, ALA ..........................................................1.5 2023-24 Associated Press Rankings As of January 15, 2024 (week 11) Team Record Points 1 UConn (39) 15-2 1542 2 Purdue (20) 15-2 1506 3 Kansas (3) 14-2 1426 4 North Carolina (1) 13-3 1407 5 Houston 14-2 1236 6 Tennessee 12-4 1147 7 Duke 13-3 1130 8 Kentucky 12-3 1123 9 Baylor 14-2 1055 10 Memphis 15-2 987 11 Wisconsin 13-3 948 12 Arizona 12-4 918 13 Auburn 14-2 905 14 Illinois 12-4 660 15 Oklahoma 13-3 633 16 Utah State 16-1 538 17 Marquette 11-5 516 18 Creighton 13-4 433 19 TCU 13-3 293 20 BYU 13-3 270 21 Dayton 13-2 261 22 Ole Miss 15-1 236 23 Florida Atlantic 13-4 221 24 Iowa State 13-3 195 25 Texas Tech 14-2 191We’re your Shield.
