The game is set for 4 p.m. and it will be telecast by ESPN. Although the season is 24 games deep, the Gators (16-8 overall, 6-5 SEC) and Wild- cats (20-4, 9-2 SEC) have had neither of their two scheduled meetings. In addition to Sat- urday’s contest, the teams also will conclude the regular season March 5 in Gainesville. Kentucky leads the all-time series, 105- 41, including 53-11 in Lexington. The teams split last season, with each team winning on the road. UK, led by 13 points each from Davion Mintz and Brandon Boston Jr., won 76-58 in Gainesville. Anthony Duruji paced UF with 15 points. The Gators got payback in Lexington, winning 71-67 as Tre Mann and Mintz led their respective teams with 21 points apiece. At the top of Florida’s stat chart this season is 6-11 forward Colin Castleton, who leads the team with 15.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots per game. Guards Tyree Appleby and Phlandrous Fleming Jr. each av- erage more than 10 points per game. Florida has an interesting offensive com- bination, as the Gators rank in the top 25 nationally in 3-point attempts and free-throw attempts. The Gators have been a big-play unit on defense, ranking 10th nationally in blocked shots per game (5.7) and 21st in the country in steals per game (9.0). Balanced Cats Win at South Carolina Oscar Tshiebwe posted his sixth straight double-double with 18 points and 14 re- bounds and TyTy Washington Jr. scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half as No. 5 Kentucky won at South Carolina 86-76 on Tuesday night. The Wildcats (20-4, 9-2 Southeastern Conference) reached 20 victories in a sea- son for the 13th time in the past 14 years. But, they had to recover after squandering an 11-point lead to the Gamecocks (13-10, 4-7) early in the final 20 minutes. Kentucky had lost its previous two games at South Carolina and when Keyshawn Bry- ant’s bucket tied things at 43-all with 15 min- utes left, it appeared the Wildcats might have to sweat out another game at Colonial Life Arena. Instead, Kentucky went on a 15-2 burst, fueled by Tshiebwe and Washington, both who played limited first-half minutes be- cause of foul trouble. Washington broke the tie with a buck- et, added a foul shot and then a nifty pass to Keion Brooks Jr. for a dunk. The 6-foot-9 Tshiebwe added a couple of inside baskets and when Washington nailed a 3-pointer, the Wildcats were up 58-47 and cruising to their fifth straight victory, fourth in a row in league play. Brooks had 15 points for the Wildcats. Washing- ton had 12 of his 14 points in the second half while Kellan Grady added 12. In all, Kentucky finished with six players in double-fig- ure scoring. For as good as Ken- tucky typically is every- where else in the SEC, it’s had its troubles at South Carolina. The last visit, it was Jermaine Couisnard’s 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded that lifted the Gamecocks to an 81-78 victory over the then- 10th-ranked Wildcats. Kentucky came out ready to put away South Carolina in the first half and led 39-28 after eight consecutive points by Jacob Toppin. However, it was gone over the next sev- en minutes as South Carolina put together a 15-4 run. The Wildcats had 10 turnovers by halftime and were outscored 14-5 off of miscues early on. They tightened up in the second half with only six more turnovers. Bryant had 18 points and 14 boards while Couisnard added 17 points for South Caro- lina. Toppin suffered an ankle injury late in the first half. He did not return to the game. “Super Sixth Man” Mintz; Draws Inspiration From Fan Kentucky’s wins last season often featured late-game heroics from Davion Mintz and the clutch gene has been on display in recent wins at Texas A&M and at home vs. Vander- bilt. On Feb. 2, Mintz tied his career high with 21 points against Vanderbilt, including five of the most important of the game. After a 16-point first-half lead had melt- ed to a precarious 44-43 advantage in the second half, Mintz stepped up with a crucial 3-pointer, beginning an 8-0 run that blunted the visitors’ momentum. Mintz bookended the run with two free throws to make the count 52-43 and the Wildcats went on to victory. Going into the Vanderbilt contest on Feb. 2, Mintz had been in a slump that saw him total just nine points over three games, mak- ing only 4 of 19 shots. Following the VU game, he said his 21-point night was fueled by an encounter with a young fan. “It was right after the Kansas game,” Mintz explained. “I was walking out of the locker room and there was this little girl, she was probably a young teenager and she’s crying her eyes out as she’s walking up to me. She was like, ‘I’m so excited to meet you. This is my first time and you’re my favorite play- er. I’ve been waiting a year.’ And I had zero points. “My heart was kind of heavy because I knew I had been struggling a while. Just to realize that God made me somebody that could make someone else feel special about themself, that just sent me over the top. My parents saw it, my cousin was at the game, he saw it. She couldn’t even keep herself to- gether and that meant so much to me that it meant so much to her. That right there is what motivates me, that people can feel so special about themselves and it made me work hard and get in the gym. That’s what turned out for today.”167 W Main Street, Lexington | @LockboxLex | LockboxLex.com LEXINGTONLocated at GLOW BIG BLUE Just blocks from Rupp Arena, we’re the perfect destination for your pre-game dinner or post-game drinks.
