It is the second meeting of the teams within a two-week period, as Kentucky won in Tuscaloosa, 66-55, on Feb. 5. Five Wild- cats scored in double figures that night, led by TyTy Washington Jr.’s 15 points. Oscar Tshiebwe had 10 points and led all rebound- ers with 15 boards. Alabama was led by Charles Bediako, who totaled 12 points and eight rebounds. The Tide has not lost since that game. Alabama has been one of the nation’s most prolific 3-point shooting teams, lead- ing the SEC and ranking 40th nationally with nine long balls made per game. The Tide, who outrebounded UK in Tuscaloosa, rank in the nation’s top 15 teams in total rebounds and offensive rebounds per game. Alabama is led by junior guard Jaden Shackleford at 17.1 points per game and he is second in rebounding with 5.7 boards per outing. Junior guard Jahvon Quinerly is scoring at a 14.2 rate and leads the team in assists with 4.5 per game. Senior guard Keon Ellis scores 11.1 points per game and is the team’s lead- ing rebounder with a 5.9 average. Kentucky leads the all-time series 115-40, including 58-11 in games played in Lexing- ton. Last season in Rupp Arena, UA won 85- 65. No. 4 Kentucky Falls at No. 16 Tennessee Santiago Vescovi scored 18 points and Chandler Kennedy added 17 to lead No. 16/13 Tennessee to a 76-63 victory over No. 4/3 Kentucky on Tuesday night. Zakai Zeigler and John Fulkerson each added 14 points as the Volunteers (19-6, 10-3 Southeastern Conference) ran their home record to 14-0 this season with their eighth straight SEC victory. The Wildcats (21-5, 10-3) were led by Os- car Tshiebwe’s 13 points and 15 rebounds, his eighth-straight double-double and 20th of the season. Jacob Toppin and Davion Mintz each scored 11 points off the bench. Tennessee led by 14 at halftime. Kentucky cut the difference to eight midway through the second half. That’s when the Vols went on a 12-0 run, holding Kentucky scoreless for nearly five minutes. The teams split the regular-season series, as exactly one month earlier, Kentucky de- feated Tennessee 107- 79 in Lexington. Calipari Named to Naismith Coach of the Year Watch List With his team firm- ly in the discussion as one of the nation’s best, Kentucky coach John Calipari was recog- nized for another stel- lar coaching job with inclusion to the Werner Ladder Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year Late Season Watch List. Rebounding from one of the toughest seasons in Kentucky’s history, Calipari finds himself leading a 21-5 Kentucky squad that is ranked No. 3 in the country and is one of only three teams in the nation to rank among the nation’s best in both offensive and defen- sive efficiency and is in the mix for one of the top seeds in the NCAA Tournament. As a result, he’s being considered by the best coaching job of the season. He’s one of 15 coaches being considered. Mark Adams (Texas Tech), Ed Cooley (Providence), Scott Drew (Baylor), Mark Few (Gonzaga), Steve Forbes (Wake Forest), Greg Gard (Wisconsin) Jeff Linder (Wyoming), Tommy Lloyd (Arizo- na), Bob McKillop (Davidson), Matt McMa- hon (Murray State), Bruce Pearl (Auburn), Kelvin Sampson (Houston), Shaka Smart (Marquette) and Brad Underwood (Illinois) complete the list. Calipari is already one of just two coaches to win the Naismith Men’s Coach of the Year three times, tied with Duke’s Mike Kzryzews- ki (1989, 1992, 1999) for the most Naismith honors. Calipari is looking to become the first four-time winner of the award. He last won it in 2015. This season has featured a few milestones for Calipari. Calipari earned his 800th career win in 2021-22. At the time he was on of just 22 coaches, regardless of NCAA level of classification, to reach that barrier. Only 14 coaches have done it with at least 10 seasons at the Division I Level. In reaching the 800-win plateau, Calipari became the fourth-fastest coach to the mile- stone. He achieved the feat in 1,037 games. Only Adolph Rupp (972), Roy Williams (1,012) and Dean Smith (1,029) did it faster. Now with 805 on-court victories, Calipari is tied with Rick Byrd for 13th for the most victories in Division I history. He also surpassed 200 wins inside of Rupp Arena which is the most of any Ken- tucky coach in the venue. The Wildcats have won 16 straight inside the building dating back to last season and are 15-0 on the year. Booker and Towns Headline All-Star Weekend Two Kentucky men’s basketball alumni in Devin Booker and Karl-Anthony Towns were named to the 2022 NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 20 in Cleveland. Booker is making his third consecutive appearance, while Towns’ selection is the third of his career and first since 2019. Kentucky and Kansas are the only two programs to have multiple selections to the 2022 game. Kentucky has enjoyed unprecedented success at putting players in the NBA under John Calipari. In the 12-plus seasons of the Calipari era, 43 players have been selected in the NBA Draft, more than any other school. Included in the recent run are 32 first-round picks, three No. 1 overall selections (Anthony Davis, Towns and John Wall) and 21 lottery selections. A staggering 27 players from Ken- tucky were on 2021-22 NBA opening-day rosters (including two-way and inactive lists), the most of any school. In addition to UK’s two All-Star selections, Tyrese Maxey was named to the 2022 Rising Stars Game. Maxey is the 25th former UK player to make an appearance in the game as a part of All-Star Weekend festivities and he’s the 18th member of the Philadelphia 76ers organization to appear in the game. Towns will also participate in Saturday’s 3-Point Shooting contest.167 W Main Street, Lexington | @LockboxLex | LockboxLex.com LEXINGTONLocated at GLOW BIG BLUE Just blocks from Rupp Arena, we’re the perfect destination for your pre-game dinner or post-game drinks.
