Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Week is a nationwide event when basket- ball coaches across the country unite for a common cause – saving lives from cancer. Coaches and their staff across the nation wear sneakers during games to raise aware- ness and help save lives from cancer by raising funds and encouraging people to ed- ucate themselves about cancer prevention, screening and early detection. The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This ini- tiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional ex- cellence of coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness ef- forts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs. Since 1993, coaches have raised more than $100 million for the American Cancer Society. The Winner is ... Kentucky! Oscar Tshiebwe became the second Wildcat to win a Southeastern Conference accolade when he claimed Player of the Week honors on Jan. 23. Tshiebwe averaged 22 points and 20.5 rebounds per game in wins over Georgia and Texas A&M. Included in the week was his historic performance against the Bull- dogs when he went for a career-high 37 points and 24 boards. Freshman Cason Wallace earned South- eastern Conference Freshman of the Week accolades on Dec. 27 after posting a ca- reer-high 27 points in Kentucky’s win over Florida A&M. Kentucky has dominated the weekly SEC awards with John Calipari at the helm. UK has won more weekly SEC honors (121) than any other school during the Calipari era, including 91 SEC Freshman of the Week awards and 30 SEC Player of the Week hon- ors. #OscarWorthy Part II Senior Oscar Tshiebwe is once again in the thick of the conversation for the nation's best player after sweeping every major Na- tional Player of the Year honor a season ago. Tshiebwe currently leads the Cats in points per game (16.6), rebounds per game (14.0), field-goal percentage (.581) and blocks per game (1.1). He's second in steals per game (1.6). Tshiebwe put together a performance for the ages in a come-from-behind win over Georgia on Jan. 17. He poured in a ca- reer-high 37 points and added 24 rebounds. More about that historic performance: • The last Wildcat with a 35-point, 20-re- bound game was Mike Phillips, who had 35-20 vs. LSU on Feb. 2, 1976 • It was the the fifth 35-20 game in UK history, also Phillips (listed above), Dan Issel (36-29 vs. LSU on Feb. 22, 1969), Cotton Nash (34-20 vs. Tulane on Jan. 11, 1964) and Bill Spivey (40-34 vs. Xavier on Feb. 13, 1951) • Per ESPN, Tshiebwe’s 24 rebounds are the most for a Division I player with a 35-point game in the last 25 seasons • Per ESPN, Tshiebwe's 24 rebounds are the most in a 35-point performance in the last 25 seasons. UNC's Brice Johnson had 23 in 2016, Oklahoma's Blake Griffin had 23 in 2009 and Texas' Kevin Durant had 23 in 2007 • Tshiebwe (24) and teammate Jacob Toppin (11) combined for more rebounds (35) than Georgia's entire team (31) • He became just the third player in program history to have multiple games of at least 24 rebounds, joining Dan Issel and Cotton Nash as the only others to do so • It is the fourth 30-point game of his career • The 37-point game tied Malik Monk vs. Georgia (1/31/17) for most points in an SEC game and the third-most point in any con- test in the Calipari era • Tshiebwe's 37-point, 24-rebound game against Georgia was the fifth such contest of his UK career (at least 22 points and at least 18 rebounds). He now has five of the eight games of 20 or more points and at least 18 rebounds by an SEC player in the last 10 seasons. No other player has more than one and the feat had not been accom- plished since South Carolina's Sindarius Thornwell did so against Alabama on Feb. 7, 2017MOP IT LIKE IT ' S HOTMOP IT LIKE IT ' S HOTInside The Numbers 18 @KentuckyMBB KENTUCKY (13-6, 4-3) AT VANDERBILT (10-9, 3-3) Series Breakdown Overall - UK, 154-47 at Nashville - UK, 61-29 Calipari vs. VU - 24-4 Stackhouse vs. UK - 0-7 Current UK streak - W13 John Calipari Jerry Stackhouse Overall Record: 823-247* Overall Record: 49-63 Record at UK: 378-107 Record at VU: 49-63 Overall Seasons: 31st Overall Seasons: 4th at Kentucky: 14th at Vanderbilt: 4th * on court record UK Statistic VU 76.1 Points Per Game 73.2 39.5 Rebounds PG 37.8 16.3 Assists PG 12.2 4.4 Blocks PG 5.0 7.0 Steals PG 5.1 11.7 Turnovers PG 11.9 .452 FG Pct. .431 .368 3-Pt.
