< Previous18 @KentuckyMBB From Press Row Up Next: Kentucky Travels to Vanderbilt Kentucky will hit the road against Vander- bilt on Tuesday. The game will be televised by ESPN at 7 p.m. ET. It is the first of two meetings between the teams this season. Vanderbilt will make a trip to Rupp Arena on Feb. 2. Vanderbilt is 9-5 on the season and 1-1 in league play with an impressive win at Arkan- sas and just a two-point loss to South Carolina. The Commodores are led by Scotty Pippen Jr., who is averaging 18.3 points and 2.8 assists per game and was the preseason Southeast- ern Conference Player of the Year pick by the league’s media. Traditionally, the games against Vanderbilt have been tough for the Wildcats despite UK’s current 10-game winning streak. In recent history, the Commodores have held at least a nine-point advantage at some point in the game in six of those games, including five of the last seven. Washington’s Historic Day Leads UK Past Georgia Kentucky teammates and coaches told TyTy Washington Jr. a milestone was within reach, but the reality of breaking John Wall’s single-game school record for assists took some getting used to. ‘’I mean, John Wall, I watched him play, I watched a bunch of his highlights at Kentucky, I watched him in the NBA a lot,’’ the Wildcats freshman guard said of his All-Star predeces- sor after handing out 17 assists along with scoring 17 points in No. 16 Kentucky’s 92-77 victory over Georgia on Saturday night. ‘’For me to go out there and break the re- cord, you know, is exciting because a lot of other great point guards came here as well. I could be the one who said, ‘You know, I went to Kentucky, I set the record.’ And hopefully it gets set for a minute and I hope nobody breaks it.’’ Oscar Tshiebwe added a career-high 29 points and 17 rebounds as the Wildcats shot 63% after halftime to pull away from the Bull- dogs. Both teams looked to rebound from close losses, intensity reflected in a back-and-forth first half featuring 10 lead changes. Late bas- kets by Tshiebwe and Keion Brooks Jr. (14 points) helped the Wildcats (12-3, 2-1 South- eastern Conference) lead 40-37 at halftime before mounting several spurts, including a 13-4 run over four minutes that made it 73- 56. They made 22 of 35 in the second half and finished 40 of 70 (57%). Kario Oquendo had 22 points, Aaron Cook 17 and Noah Baumann 14 for the Bulldogs (5-10, 0-2), who dropped their fourth consec- utive game. Tshiebwe bounced back from nine points at No. 21 LSU to have his 11th double-double by the break before top- ping his previous scoring high of 25 points. The junior forward seemed head- ed for a 20-20 outing before settling for helping Kentucky win the boards 31-25. He finished 13 of 21 from the field. The postgame spotlight, though, was focused on Washington. Handling point guard duties for Ken- tucky in place of injured Sahvir Wheeler, Washington made 8 of 13 from the field and broke Wall’s single-game assists mark set against Hartford on Dec. 29, 2009 with 25 seconds remaining. Davion Mintz made 5 of 7 3-pointers and 7 of 10 shots overall to finish with 19 points off the bench. Washington’s achievement is all the more impressive considering cramps lim- ited him in the second half of Kentucky’s 65-60 loss at No. 21 LSU on Tuesday night. Not to mention, somewhat ironic Wheeler has thrived as the facilitator. But with Wheeler sidelined with a neck in- jury sustained against LSU after running into a hard but legal screen early on, Washington was suddenly thrust into ballhandling duties against Georgia. He simply tapped into an- other responsibility of playing guard for 36:50 and contributed five rebounds. ‘’Yeah, I was upset he had two turnovers,’’ Kentucky coach John Calipari said, jokingly. ‘’He’s a playmaker and guard. Whether he’s bringing it up, or whether he’s away from the ball, he’s still a playmaking guard who can shoot. Was that a quiet 17 (points) he had?’’ Georgia coach Tom Crean added, ‘’I hope they weren’t surprised that we played well in the first half. I wasn’t and we had to prepare for this game with two different game plans. We had to prepare (if) Sahvir (Wheeler) was going to play and we back him up at the free throw line, and we had to prepare as if they have three shooters on the court. ‘’We ended up having to guard their guards and there were very few places where you could help from.’’ Wheeler Remains Day-to-Day with a Neck Injury Kentucky guard Sahvir Wheeler remains day-to-day with a neck injury he suffered in Tuesday’s game at LSU. John Calipari said Saturday that if Wheeler is unable to practice Monday afternoon, he would not play Tuesday at Vanderbilt. Wheeler was knocked out of the LSU game less than four minutes into the game when he ran head-first into a screen by LSU’s 7-foot, 230-pound Efton Reid. He did not return to the game and missed Saturday’s matchup with his former school, Georgia. Without Wheeler at LSU, UK scored a season-low 60 points and shot a sea- son-worst 36.2%. With freshman guard TyTy Washington Jr. also sidelined for part of the second half with cramps in his legs, UK managed just one field goal over nearly a 12-minute stretch and was outscored 20-2 after UK took a 50-41 lead with 13:06 left to play. “You saw that Sahvir stirs the drink offen- sively for us,” Calipari said. “Makes our game fast. Someone said, in the last minutes Kellan (Grady) didn’t get the ball. And I say, we didn’t have a point guard in. So, those guys who would find him, that’s who they are. So now we’ve got to say, all right, how do we do this?” Kentucky bounced back without Wheeler on Saturday vs. Georgia as Washington set the UK single-game school record with 17 assists. Wheeler led the Southeastern Conference in assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio last season at Georgia. His 193 assists in 2020- 21 broke Georgia’s previous single-season as- sists record by 24 dimes despite a shortened season. He transferred after the year was over. Wheeler has been as good as advertised for the Wildcats. His assists average took a hit with the limited action Tuesday, but he is still ranked third nationally with 7.3 assists per game (through games on Jan. 8). Wheel- er has dished out at least eight assists seven times and at least six assists in 11 games while adding 9.6 points per game. His 26 points vs. North Carolina is the most by a Wildcat this season.167 W Main Street, Lexington | @LockboxLex | LockboxLex.com LEXINGTONLocated at GLOW BIG BLUE Just blocks from Rupp Arena, we’re the perfect destination for your pre-game dinner or post-game drinks.
