< Previous68 @UKFootball T he Kentucky men’s soccer team enters the weekend with an undefeated record and a No. 10 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25. Led by 10th-year head coach Johan Ced- ergren, Kentucky began the season with a scoreless tie after two overtime periods at No. 25 Coastal Carolina in the Chanticleers’ first official match as a Conference USA men’s soccer affiliate on Aug. 26. Since the draw, the Wildcats have rattled off five consecutive victories for a 5-0-1 (0-0-1 C-USA) record. On Aug. 30, Kentucky made its home de- but at Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex with a 3-0 win over Wright State. Senior for- ward Daniel Evans scored the first goal of the season in the 35th minute, but it was junior forward Eythor Bjorgolfsson who stole the show with the third brace of his career. On Sept. 3, Kentucky welcomed Notre Dame to Lexington for the first time since the program’s second season of varsity compe- tition in 1992. The Wildcats secured a dra- matic 1-0 victory over the Fighting Irish with a game winner by graduate forward Luke Andrews in the 71st minute, avenging a 1-0 season-opening loss at Notre Dame in 2020. Goalkeeper Jan Hoffelner and the Ken- tucky backline of Robert Screen, Luis Gras- sow, Oliver Juul and Lucca Rodrigues opened the season with three consecutive shutouts over 294 minutes. The Cats clinched their first road win with a 3-1 victory at Louisville on Sept. 7. Former Louisville graduate transfer Camer- on Wheeler scored his first goal in blue and white against his old team in the 43rd min- ute, equalizing the contest just before half- time. The Cardinals conceded an own goal in the 60th before Bjorgolfsson finished off Kentucky’s in-state rival with another goal in the 63rd. The win was the Wildcats’ second straight in the annual series, as well as the first at Louisville since 2012. Kentucky leads the all-time matchup 14-8-5. On Sept. 12, the Wildcats defeated Duquesne 3-1 at home. Fifth-year midfield- er Bailey Rouse, one of two team captains, tied the match with his first career penalty kick in the 43rd minute. Sophomore Ben Damage finished the game winner for his first collegiate goal in the 60th, while An- drews scored his second goal as a Wildcat in the 63rd. In its most recent outing on Sept. 19, Kentucky defeated Western Michigan 1-0 for its fourth shutout of the season. Senior forward Brock Lindow, who led the team with five goals in 2020, scored for the first time this season with the game winner in the 74th minute. The Wildcats will resume conference play against reigning national champion and two- time reigning C-USA champion No. 5 Mar- shall on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET in Huntington, West Virginia. Kentucky entered the season looking to blend four graduate transfers, one first-year junior and four freshmen with 17 returners from last season’s team. In 2020, the Wild- cats reached the round of 16 in the NCAA Championship for the second time in three seasons and the third time overall in school history. Four players from last year’s roster— Aimé Mabika, Kalil ElMedkhar, Leon Jones and Cyrus Margono—have since entered the professional ranks.
