The Wild- cats went 27-5, reaching the semifinals at ITA National Indoors, winning the program’s second ever SEC Tournament crown and battling their way back to the national quar- terfinals at the 2023 NCAA Tournament. The sustained success in recent years un- der head coach Cedric Kauffmann has now started to pay dividends in the recruiting world. This season, the Wildcats are wel- coming what Tennis Recruiting dubbed the No. 7 ranked freshman class in the country. Jack Loutit, Matthew Rankin and Eli Ste- phenson, a trio with both international flair and local flavor, comprise the promising first-year group for Kentucky. “I’m really excited about this class,” Kauffmann said. “Matt, Jack and Eli are a very special group of guys. They are talented with a good work ethic and have wonder- ful families around them that will trust us during this process. We are looking forward to working with them and making them the best student-athletes they can be.” “With Eli, Jack and Matt we have three guys that we believe have the potential to do something special here at Kentucky,” as- sociate coach Matt Gordon added. “These boys are extremely hard workers, have a strong passion for the game and have the character we look for to be successful.” Loutit, a lefty from Auckland, New Zea- land, comes to Kentucky with ATP ranking points already to his name, currently sitting at No. 1,013 in the world. He peaked at No. 43 in the ITF Junior rankings and owns eight total ITF titles between singles and doubles. He has reached the round of 32 in singles at the Junior US Open and the semifinals in doubles. “Jack is one of the most talented play- ers in this class,” Kauffmann said. "He has been on the big stage in tennis and is driven and wants to become one of the best in our sport. A quick lefty with a classy backhand, we will be looking to make his forehand and transition world class.” Joining Loutit as newly added interna- tionals is Rankin, a big server from Edin- burgh, Scotland. Loutit has competed in the junior grand slams, reaching the semifinals in dou- bles at the junior U.S. Open along- side Loutit in 2022. Rankin has won a total of 11 ITF titles between singles and doubles and is a two-time recipient of Tennis Scotland’s Junior Player of the Year Award. “Matt is a pow- erful player and a hard worker,” Kauff- mann said. He will be one of the best serve plus one play- ers in the business. I also love how he plays doubles. He plays with passion, moves a lot at the net and is a great teammate. I can’t wait to work with him. We are going to put him in a position to be a ma- jor impact at Kentucky.” Stephenson, who grew up just over an hour from Lexington in neighboring Louis- ville, Ky., gives the Wildcats a local presence on the ros- ter. The Blue-Chip recruit was ranked the No. 14 prospect in the country by Tennis Recruiting, and the top junior player in the state. Stephenson is a two-time Kentucky high school state champion and an Easter Bowl Dou- bles Finalist. “Eli is a hidden gem. His coach, Alex Gornet, has done a very good job with him and I think this sets him up to be an imme- diate impact.” With these three freshmen joining an already accomplished group of returners, Kentucky men’s tennis appears primed to continue its success as the calendar moves to 2024.
