Game time is 2 p.m. and it will be televised on CBS. Both teams are jockeying for position for the SEC Tournament as Kentucky could finish anywhere between third and fourth. Florida is in a six-way logjam among teams that will finish between fifth and 10th place. Florida has won three of its last four games, including back-to-back road victories at Georgia and Vanderbilt. The Gators are led by big man Colin Castleton, who leads the team with 16 points and nine rebounds per game and has blocked 60 shots. Florida is a prolific 3-point shooting team, making more than eight per game, with Tyree Appleby (11.4 points per game), Phlandrous Fleming Jr. (10.9 ppg) leading the long-range shooters. Defensively, Florida is third in the league with by allowing only 65.4 points per game. The Gators are among the league leaders in blocked shots, 5.4 per game, and steals, with 8.2 per contest. Kentucky leads the all-time series, 106-41, including 38-26 in games played in Gaines- ville. On Feb. 12 in Lexington, Oscar Tshieb- we’s 27 points and 19 rebounds led UK to a 78-57 victory. The Gators were paced by Castleton’s 18 points and seven boards. Last Time Out: Hot-Shooting Cats Top Rebels in Home Finale Oscar Tshiebwe had 18 points and 15 rebounds, Sahvir Wheeler added 16 points and seven assists, and No. 7 Kentucky shot 60% before holding off Ole Miss 83-72 in its home finale Tuesday night. Kentucky (24-6, 13-4 Southeastern Con- ference) took control after four minutes be- hind hot shooting, hitting 9 of its first 12 attempts including 4 of 6 from long range and finishing 59% at halftime. The Wildcats spread the offense well, with five players scoring at least seven points in the first 20 minutes. Tshiebwe jump-started Kentucky’s 62% second-half shooting by scoring six points with a couple of dunks. The Wildcats even- tually led 70-56 with 6:03 remaining before the Rebels rallied to within 76-70 on James White’s jumper with 2:15 left. TyTy Washington Jr. (14 points off the bench) followed with three free throws in 20 seconds before Tshiebwe’s steal resulted in two more from the line by Keion Brooks Jr. to make it 81-70. Tshiebwe’s defensive rebound led to Brooks’ jumper with 17 seconds left for a 13-point cushion as the Wildcats fin- ished unbeaten at home. Matthew Murrell made 5 of 8 3-pointers for 25 points for the Rebels (13-17, 4-13), who dropped their third in a row and seventh in eight games. They fell to 2-56 all-time in Lexington. Tshiebwe, the national leader in rebounds per game coming in (15.3), helped Ken- tucky win the boards 30-24 and made 9 of 12 from the field for his 24th double-dou- ble this season. Brooks fin- ished with 10 points and five rebounds. More Game Notes • Kentucky finished 18-0 at home for the 2021-22 season. It is the 14th undefeated home season in the 46-year history of Rupp Arena. It is the sixth spotless home record in Coach John Calipari’s 13 seasons at Kentucky. • Among Tshiebwe’s double-doubles this season are the last 12 games in a row, the first Wildcat to do that since Dan Issel had 12 consecutive double-doubles in the 1969-70 season. • Kellan Grady and Davion Mintz were honored before the game in Senior Night cer- emonies. SEC Tournament Seeding: UK Will be No. 3 With a Win, No. 4 with a Loss With one game remaining in the league schedule, Auburn is first with a 14-3 record and Kentucky, Arkansas and Tennessee are tied for second with a 13-4 mark. A win at Florida will tie Kentucky for first or second place in the SEC standings. How- ever, because of the tie-breaker scenarios, Kentucky will be guaranteed the No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournament and play Friday at 8 p.m. A loss at Florida will tie Kentucky for third place in the standings. Because of the tie-breaker scenarios, Kentucky will be the No. 4 seed in the SEC Tournament and play Friday at 2 p.m. Wheeler One of Five Finalists for Bob Cousy Award As UK’s primary floor general, Sahvir Wheeler has shown the ability to lead an of- fense in a variety of ways. He’s risen to the occasion, and his ability to both distribute and score has led to him being named one of five finalists for the Bob Cousy Award. Through games on March 2, the Georgia transfer ranks third in the country with 7.0 assists per game. He has dished out dou- ble-digit assists four times this season -- in- cluding a career-high 14 in the win vs. North Florida -- at least eight assists 11 times, and at least six assists in 19 games. Wheeler’s ability to get the entire team in- volved is shown by the fact that UK has five players averaging double-figure scoring. The only team in the Calipari era to finish the sea- son with five players averaging double figures was the 2012 national champion team. Wheeler led the Southeastern Conference in assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio last season at Georgia. His 193 assists in 2020-21 broke Georgia’s previous sin- gle-season assists record by 24 dimes despite a shortened season. In the Feb. 15 game at Tennessee, he reached both the 500 mark in career assists and 100 mark in career steals. Wheeler’s current rate of 7.00 assists per game is a shade behind Tyler Ulis’ 7.03 aver- age when he set the UK single-season assists record in 2015-16 with 246 dimes. He en- tered the season ranked sixth among all re- turners nationally in career assists per game. With 182 assists in 2021-22, Wheeler ranks 10th in UK single-season history, de- spite missing four games this season with injuries.167 W Main Street, Lexington | @LockboxLex | LockboxLex.com LEXINGTONLocated at GLOW BIG BLUE Just blocks from Rupp Arena, we’re the perfect destination for your pre-game dinner or post-game drinks.
