Game time is 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT in Tusca- loosa) and it will be televised on ESPN. This is the first of two meetings within a two-week period, as the Crimson Tide will roll into Lexington Feb. 19. Kentucky leads the overall series, 114-40, but Alabama won both meetings in 2021. UK leads 31-25 in games played in Tuscaloosa. Alabama is 14-8 overall, 4-5 SEC, and is coming off a 100-81 loss Tuesday at No. 1 Auburn. In the last home game, Alabama dispatched then-No. 4 Baylor, 87-78, in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The Tide is 10-1 this season in the confines of Coleman Coliseum. Junior guard Jaden Shackleford leads Al- abama with 17.6 points per game and, al- though 6-foot-3, is the team’s second-leading rebounder at 5.7 per game. Jahvon Quinerly is the No. 2 scorer at 14.8 points per game and leads the team in assists with a 4.3 clip. Another guard, Keon Ellis averages 12 points per game and paces the rebounding with a 6.2 average. “Old Guys” Lead Cats Past Vanderbilt During the John Calipari era at Kentucky, freshmen have typically led the way for Cal’s Cats. But the 2021-22 Cats are Calipari’s most experienced team during his UK tenure. It was three of those veterans who led Kentucky to a 77-70 win over Vanderbilt on Wednesday night at Rupp Arena. In the early going, Kellan Grady, playing his fifth year of college basketball, was light- ing it up from long range. Soon thereafter, he was joined by Davion Mintz, who is also playing his fifth year, who hit two of his first three shots from three-point land. The “old guys” helped the Cats establish a 10-point halftime advantage. In the second half, when Vandy had climbed within a point at 44-43, it was Mintz who drilled a left wing three-pointer to give the Cats momentum. In fact, it sparked an 8-0 run -- completed with two free throws by Mintz -- that gave UK a 52-43 lead with 12:11 to play. Also in the second 20 minutes, Keion Brooks Jr., another of the Cats older players, stepped up when his team needed him. Af- ter scoring a career-high 27 points on Sat- urday at Kansas, Brooks notched 20 points in Wednesday’s win. It marked the first time in his UK career that the junior from Fort Wayne, Indiana, has scored 20 or more points in consecutive games. More Game Notes: • Kentucky is 14-0 at home this season and has won its last 15 games in Rupp Arena. • Kentucky forced 18 turnovers, third-most of the season, leading to a crucial 15-3 advantage to points off turnovers. • With the help of the turnovers, Kentucky managed to win despite shooting only 38.6 per- cent from the field. UK is now 2-4 this season when being outshot by the opponent. • Entering the game as the SEC’s leading team in assist/turnover ratio (+1.42), the Wildcats had 16 assists and only 10 turnovers tonight. It is the fifth time in the last eight games that UK has had 10 or fewer miscues. • With Mintz scoring 21, UK now has six play- ers who have scored at least 20 points in a game this season, also Oscar Tshiebwe, TyTy Washing- ton Jr., Grady, Brooks and Sahvir Wheeler. Booker and Towns Named 2022 NBA All-Stars Two Kentucky men’s basketball alumni in Devin Booker and Karl-Anthony Towns were named to the 2022 NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 20 in Cleveland. Booker is making his third consecutive appearance, while Towns’ selection is the third of his career and first since 2019. Kentucky and Kansas are the only two programs to have multiple selections to the 2022 game. Kentucky has enjoyed unprecedented success at putting players in the NBA under John Calipari. In the 12-plus seasons of the Calipari era, 43 players have been selected in the NBA Draft, more than any other school. Included in the recent run are 32 first-round picks, three No. 1 overall selections (Anthony Davis, Towns and John Wall) and 21 lottery selections. A staggering 27 players from Ken- tucky were on 2021-22 NBA opening-day rosters (including two-way and inactive lists), the most of any school. Calipari’s players are not only reaching the next level, but they are also succeeding when they do. Since 2010, eight Calipari-coached players have garnered 28 All-Star selections with the latest picks. Derrick Rose (from Memphis) was named league MVP in 2011. Five of his players have been tabbed All-NBA (Rose, Wall, Davis, DeMarcus Cousins and Towns), three have been named NBA Rookie of the Year (Rose, Tyreke Evans and Towns), Julius Randle was tabbed the NBA’s Most Im- proved Player in 2021 and 15 players from Calipari’s first 11 teams at Kentucky have made the NBA All-Rookie teams. In addition to UK’s two All-Star selections, Tyrese Maxey was named to the 2022 Rising Stars Game on Tuesday. Maxey is the 25h former UK player to make an appearance in the game as a part of All-Star Weekend festiv- ities and he’s the 18th member of the Phila- delphia 76ers organization to appear in the game. Using figures compiled by basketball-ref- erence.com and spotrac.com, Calipa- ri-coached players only (which includes Rose but not Rajon Rondo) have amassed nearly $3.4 billion in career NBA contracts. In the 12 seasons Calipari has been the head coach at Kentucky, his players have totaled nearly $3 billion in NBA contracts.167 W Main Street, Lexington | @LockboxLex | LockboxLex.com LEXINGTONLocated at GLOW BIG BLUE Just blocks from Rupp Arena, we’re the perfect destination for your pre-game dinner or post-game drinks.
