< PreviousOLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE: VOLLEYBALL 101 A familiar face earns a new title while a new addition joins Brent Crouch’s staff. The two coaching staff announcements highlighted the offseason for Auburn volleyball. Rachel Corbelli, who enters her fourth season on Auburn volleyball’s staff, was promoted to associate head coach in May. The College Station, Texas native has overseen Auburn’s return to the NCAA Tournament in 2022, the program’s first- ever back-to-back berths in the NCAA Tournament in 2023, back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 1991-92 and Auburn volleyball’s first appearance in the coaches poll. “Rachel has done an outstanding job since she arrived at Auburn,” said Crouch. “Her relationships with our student- athletes and incoming recruits have led to the direct success we’ve seen on the court. She’s an excellent coach with a proven track record, and I look forward to working with her side-by-side.” Focusing on defense, Corbelli has helped the Tigers become one of the strongest teams in the Southeastern Conference. Since her arrival on the Plains, Auburn has finished no lower than sixth in the SEC in opponent hitting percentage. “I’m extremely thankful to Brent, our administration, our staff and the student-athletes who make this program special,” Corbelli said. “They make it easy to show up every day excited to build this program for the Auburn Family. I have an enormously strong belief in what we are doing and the way we are doing it, and I’m honored to continue that work alongside all the incredible people here on the Plains.” Corbelli’s guidance of the Tigers’ back row has seen Auburn jump well into national prominence. Last season, the Tigers averaged 15.62 digs per set, good enough for the third-best average in the conference and the fifth-best single-season average in the rally- scoring era. Auburn held opponents to a hitting percentage of .199 or lower 13 separate times in 2024, resulting in a 12-1 record in those contests. Joining the Tiger staff this season as an assistant coach is Rachael Sunder, a former All-American and National Champion at UCLA. “My family and I are thrilled to be joining the Auburn community,” Sunder said. “From the moment I first visited the Plains, I felt a strong sense of family and support that makes this place so special. I’m incredibly grateful to coach Crouch for the opportunity to be part of this program and to continue learning and growing as a coach. I look forward to contributing alongside such a passionate and driven staff and pouring into these student-athletes as we chase something great together.” For the past four seasons, Sunder has acted as the assistant director of Austin Skyline Juniors Volleyball Clubs, one of the top programs in the nation. “We couldn’t be more excited to have Rachel join our program,” Crouch said. “She brings a wealth of experience from both the club and collegiate levels, as well as an incredible career as an athlete. Her background and knowledge will be invaluable to our program as we move forward.” Across her four years at UCLA, Sunder racked up a litany of accolades, including AVCA All-American, the NCAA Tournament MVP in 2011, All-Pac 12 and All-Pacific Region. Sunder pieced together a 20-kill, eight-dig performance in the 2011 championship match to lift the Bruins over Illinois. To this day, Sunder remains in the top 15 in program history with 1442 kills in her career. Following her prolific career with the UCLA, Sunday played professionally in Puerto Rico for Valencianas De Juncos as well as IHF Volley Club in Italy. Sunder also earned a stint with the US Women’s National Team. Sunder also spent two seasons as the volunteer assistant coach with Texas, helping the Longhorns to a 54-8 record over her tenure and a national runner-up finish in 2016. Auburn opens its home slate this week with a pair of matches at Neville Arena. The Tigers host Troy on Wednesday before returning to the court Friday to battle Jackson State.
