In 1932 halfback Jimmy Hitchcock made Auburn history by becoming the first player to earn All-America honors. Eighty-nine years later, Roger McCreary continued the legacy of Auburn greats by becoming a first team All-American on three different lists in 2021. The first cornerback to earn All-America honors since Chris Davis in 2013, McCreary was placed on the Associated Press, The Athletic and ESPN first teams. n Seventy-two Tiger players have combined for 81 first team All-America honors. End Jimmy Phillips is Auburn’s most celebrated All-American, making 11 teams in 1957. Pat Sullivan, Terry Beasley, Bo Jackson and Tracy Rocker were each named to 10 teams in a single season. n Auburn has had 22 seasons with multiple All-Americans and nine seasons with three or more. Unsur- prising considering her dad, Zac, coaches Auburn’s safeties and captained the Tigers’ 2010 national championship team. Not anymore, now that eight-year-old Mia has befriended another Auburn coach who shares the third grader’s passion for horses, equestrian’s Jessica Braswell. “She doesn’t even want to come to football now that she has a connection with equestrian,” Etheridge joked. “For her to have that experience has been a blessing because of how much she enjoys it.” In his third season coaching at his alma mater, Etheridge expresses gratitude for the opportunity to share the Auburn experience with his daughter, from Tiger Walk to preseason practice. “It means everything to me,” he said. “It’s always fun to have her around.” Auburn’s defensive backs see tenderness when watching father and daughter. When they watch video of Etheridge’s playing days from 2007-10, they see toughness. The kind of grit that helped him return from torn neck ligaments and a cracked vertebrae his ju- nior season to be the second-leading tackler during Auburn’s magical run to the 2010 national championship. “They’ve got to be able to climb a barbed wire fence with no shirt on,” said Etheridge of the fortitude required to play winning SEC defense. “This is Auburn football. It’s not finesse. It’s hard-nosed. It’s physical. We want to run, hit and swarm the football.” Etheridge first felt the call to coaching while in high school in Troy, Alabama. “I love the game of football,” he said. “You have to be in love with the process, the daily grind of how you’re getting better. For me, it’s knowing that I’m working with a team and get to serve other people and inspire the guys coming behind me. “That’s my passion, being a great teacher. Football is a game of life and adversity is going to strike. You always try to find a way to overcome that adversity. That’s the greatest part of why I love the game, because I get to impact a lot of people by be- ing part of a team sport.” One of three Auburn football lettermen assistant coaches on the Plains along with running backs coach and associate head coach Carnell Williams and receivers coach Marcus Da- vis, Etheridge credits head coach Hugh Freeze for including alumni when putting together his staff. “His ambition every day is trying to make Auburn great,” Etheridge said. “All of us have played at Auburn on the high- est level, and his ambition for that in recruiting and how we do things every day. We’re grateful to Coach Freeze for feeling like we were representing the program and Auburn the right way. We take pride in that. “I’m competitive. I don’t want him to outwork me in recruit- ing. It makes it great walking into the building every day know- ing that Coach Freeze wants you to be successful in all phases of your life and be able to spend time with your family. I’ve been grateful to be a part of his staff.” Freeze’s faith-based coaching approach appeals to Ether- idge. “One thing I love about Coach Freeze is he stands 10 toes down on his faith,” Etheridge said. “The family that prays to- gether, stays together. Watching him, his faith and how he leads us and how it trickles down to the team.” Auburn’s sense of family first attracted Zac Etheridge to the Plains when he committed to the Tigers before his high school senior season. Eighteen years later, it’s what energizes Zac and Mia, one drill – and one horse ride – at a time. “Love what you do and cherish the moments you get with the people around you that you get to impact,” he said. “It’s becoming a selfish world, and everybody needs to come back into understanding of being there for each other and love your neighbor as much as you love yourself.” ZAC ETHERIDGE BY JEFF SHEARER AUBURNTIGERS.COM MEET THE COACHES: AUBURN SECONDARY COACHBusiness Friends Working for the Future of Auburn 334.321.2321 | brightinvestments.com Auburn, AL | Memphis, TN | Nashville, TN | Tampa, FL WAR EAGLE!
