In 1932 halfback Jimmy Hitchcock made Auburn history by becoming the first player to earn All-America honors. Eighty-nine years later, Roger McCreary continued the legacy of Auburn greats by becoming a first team All-American on three different lists in 2021. The first cornerback to earn All-America honors since Chris Davis in 2013, McCreary was placed on the Associated Press, The Athletic and ESPN first teams. n Seventy-two Tiger players have combined for 81 first team All-America honors. End Jimmy Phillips is Auburn’s most celebrated All-American, making 11 teams in 1957. Pat Sullivan, Terry Beasley, Bo Jackson and Tracy Rocker were each named to 10 teams in a single season. n Auburn has had 22 seasons with multiple All-Americans and nine seasons with three or more. Carnell Williams Karlos Dansby Terry BeasleyTOWARD THE PURCHASE OF A MANUFACTURED HOME $75,000 During select SEC games this year, if Auburn returns their first received kick of the second half for a touchdown or scores on the first three plays after that kick, one lucky fan could win up to $75,000 toward the purchase of a new manufactured home from an AMHA retailer. 64 ON THE PLAINS WITH KASSIDY WOODS Three schools, four separate head coaches, three conferences, three dif- ferent time zones and a brand-new baby girl. Plenty has changed for wide re- ceiver Kassidy Woods over a three-year stretch. It’s been his faith, family and football journey that has given Woods a fresh new perspective on life. A journey that started with southern roots in Arkansas has given him one last ride at Auburn. A collegiate career that began at Washington State, took Woods to North- ern Colorado and eventually landed him on the Plains began well before his first tour of the Palouse. “It was my two older brothers,” Woods explained. “My older brother [Kahlee] was ranked nationally coming out of Sherman (Texas) High School and my other brother [Konnell] was my quar- terback all throughout high school. “When I was younger, my dad would have me competing against them. I al- ways lost but just seeing their camara- derie, how well-respected they were around the city and being involved with different leadership organizations, it was just something that always stood out to me. I wanted to have the same impact as them. I’m still trying to compete with them to this day.” It didn’t take long for Kassidy to ele- vate himself as a standout at Greenhill High School in Addison, Texas, and soon Woods caught the attention of one of the greatest offensive minds in college football, Mike Leach. “I learned a ton from him and the peo- ple around the program,” Woods said. “Starting at Washington State and being at a Power 5 conference was like a dream come true. I still wear my Tyler Hilinski wrist- band and Bryce Beekman was a teammate of mine as well. It was an interesting time, and I learned a lot about myself.” Coaching changes, COVID-19 and other circumstances brought Woods to Northern Colorado. Even in the nation’s top FCS conference (Big Sky), Woods still managed to stand above the crowd despite all the adversity. In two years with the Bears, Woods stacked up 57 catches for over 600 yards, including 123 yards on 11 catches against Northern Arizona in 2021. Meanwhile, Woods wasn’t just mak- ing highlight-worthy plays on the field. Remembering his roots and what he admired most about his brothers’ jour- ney, Woods graduated from Northern Colorado with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and was elected president of the Big Sky’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council while there. Just when life almost seemed fig- ured out, Woods was thrown another curveball. A shoulder injury and another coaching change meant his time on the High Plains was over. With one year left to play, he had to get healthy and find a new school. Woods and his fiancée Kyli were already expecting the arrival of their daughter Serenity in June, but it was on a trip back home on Mother’s Day when he got some answers. Momentum start- ed to swing in his favor. “During that whole time, I kept work- ing out, kept taking care of my shoulder and kept working for the baby,” Woods said. “I just kept believing in my faith that I was going to be able to have another opportunity. It’s amazing that the bless- ing on the backside of that was expo- nentially greater than I ever anticipated. “I took a visit to Southeastern Oklaho- ma, and I was going to be satisfied with that. But then I got the call that Auburn was going to give me a preferred walk-on (spot). I told my mom, ‘This is a big risk in my eyes, but it’s one that I’m excited about.’” From that day, the wins kept coming for Woods. On June 16, a healthy Seren- ity entered the world. Twelve days later, Woods arrived at Auburn for summer workouts. The ultimate big risk of join- ing the program as a walk-on paid off as Woods was placed on scholarship on November 3. His family is now part of the Auburn Family, and they wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. “They’ve been very welcoming,” Woods said. “Auburn is a tight-knit com- munity, and I missed that being away from the South. My coaches and team- mates have been so welcoming and un- derstanding. There’s not really any ego here, and that’s what’s cool about it. For a man with plenty of life events packed into the last four years, Woods may have defined the term success dif- ferently during each one of them. In 2023, it’s his family that keeps it all in perspective. “For me, it’s obviously making sure my daughter’s growing up the way she should,” Woods said. “So, she can see her dad living out what I believe God has told me to do within the assignment and the season. I just want to be a great fa- ther and a great husband. Because [Kyli] has been with me at my lowest. She was there for me, and I really figured out who I was.” ON THE PLAINS WITH KASSIDY WOODS BY THOMAS HOFFMAN AUBURNTIGERS.COM BELIEVING IN MY FAITHBusiness Friends Working for the Future of Auburn 334.321.2321 | brightinvestments.com Auburn, AL | Memphis, TN | Nashville, TN | Tampa, FL WAR EAGLE!
