< PreviousOLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE: SOFTBALL 101 How do you shatter a glass ceiling that’s never been broken? Dare to dream the impossible? That’s exactly what the 2015 Auburn softball team did a decade ago, establishing a new benchmark for the program. This weekend the team returns to Au- burn to reflect and celebrate the accom- plishments of the pioneering women. The Team of Firsts. It was a season that rewrote the re- cord books with a revamped offense never seen at Jane B. Moore Field. High- lighted by All-American performances from Kasey Cooper and Emily Carosone, individual performances from 2015 still stand in the top 10 in program history a decade later. The Tigers posted a 56-11 overall re- cord, which set the program record for most wins in a season until the mark was bested in 2016. A staple in the nation- al spotlight throughout the season, the 2015 Tigers earned the program’s first top 10 national ranking and closed the season at No. 3. Behind 18 wins in Southeastern Con- ference play, Auburn finished second overall the league, its highest finish in school history and turned its attention to the 2015 SEC Tournament. After wins over Missouri and in-state rival Alabama, the Tigers advanced to the championship game to face perennial staple Tennessee. The Lady Vols were three outs away from securing the championship, but the Tigers capitalized on a seventh inning er- ror to tie the game and force extras. Car- lee Wallace’s only hit of the night was the game winner in extras to earn Auburn’s first SEC Tournament title. “The Team of Firsts,” said former Tiger infielder Whitney Jordan. “It was truly a dream. It was never easy, but I would do it all over again and again. It was one of the most unforgettable and rewarding experiences of my life, and I’ll cherish it with these incredible women forever.” Postseason success didn’t stop there. After earning a No. 4 overall national seed, Auburn brought a NCAA Regional back to the Plains for the first time since 2005. Outscoring opponents 12 to 5, the Tigers earned three straight wins to not only ad- vance but also host an NCAA Super Re- gional for the first time in school history. Auburn earned two dramatic vic- tories over Louisiana, including a 12-11 extra-inning slugfest to open Supers, to punch the program’s first ever ticket to the Women’s College World Series. “My time with Auburn softball is something I’ll always cherish,” said for- mer shortstop Kelsey Bogaards. “Mak- ing program history with back-to-back SEC titles. Reaching heights never seen before with World Series runs was un- forgettable. Seeing my team fight while I was out with a torn ACL was hard, but it created the strongest bond by having a team fight for one another for a common goal. Those teammates became lifelong friends, and I am forever grateful we shared that journey together.” The Tigers earned a pair of victories in Oklahoma City over Tennessee and UCLA but was ultimately eliminated just short of the championship series. The experience set the stage for the 2016 program to make a return appearance the following year, cementing Auburn as one of the ris- ing powerhouses in collegiate softball. “Playing on the 2015 Auburn softball team with this group of girls still feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said former Auburn catcher Anna Gibbs. “The hard work and discipline that it took to turn a program around and compete for a national championship at the Wom- en’s College World Series prepared me for greatness after softball. I would do it all over again if I could do it with the girls on the 2015 team.” So how do you do what’s never been done? It’s sacrifice. It’s blood, sweat and tears behind the scenes. With a sister- hood to rally behind, nothing is impossi- ble when you believe in work, hard work. The legacy left sparked a newfound flame for every team after to chase.
