< Previous100 OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE: TRACK & FIELD AUBURNTIGERS.COM The summer months of 2024 proved to be a historic and eventful time for the Auburn track and field program under second-year head coach Leroy Burrell. Burrell’s Tigers, led by one of the best sprints groups in program history, were NCAA runners up in the men’s team title, while also claiming a national title in the men’s 4x100m relay. Auburn’s second place showing matched the best men’s team finish in program history and was the Tigers best overall effort at NCAAs since the women claimed the national championship outdoors in 2006. The Tigers, who scored 40 points, were just one point shy of tying and two points shy of winning the team title outright. The quartet of Azeem Fahmi, Kanyinsola Ajayi, Dario Matau and Makanakaishe Charamba won Auburn’s first national title in the 4x100 relay, winning in a school-record time of 38.03, the third fastest in collegiate history. In the men’s 100m dash, Auburn was the only school with two finalists and senior Favour Ashe joined Ajayi captured the silver and bronze medals. True freshman Ja’Kobe Tharp, a native of Rockvale, Tennessee, had a historic season, winning the Southeastern Conference 110m hurdles championship, breaking a 46-year- old American U20 national record, crossing in 13.18. At the outdoor national championships, Tharp finished second in the event, marking the first Auburn freshman to finish second or better at the outdoor championships since Nathon Allen was runner up in the 400m seven years ago. All told, the Tiger concluded the outdoor season with 14 All-America honors. Seven earned first-team honors including Ashe, Ajayi, Charamba, Fahmi, Matau, Tharp and Keyshawn Strachan in the men’s javelin. Junior Matthew Rueff received honorable mention honors in shot put, while sophomore Michael May was named to second team all- American in the decathlon. The highest finisher for the women was sophomore Megan Hague, who placed 12th in shot put where she earned second team all-American. Senior Shaniya Holley (women’s javelin), junior Vimbayi Maisvorewa (women’s 400m), freshman Marley Raikiwasa (women’s discus) and sophomore Alyssa Quinones- Mixon (women’s pole vault) all received honorable mention all-American distinctions in their respective events. 2024 Summer Olympics Auburn was very well represented at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, Auburn track and field was well represented by five current and former Tigers. Competing in his first Olympics and representing Zimbabwe, Charamba advanced to the men’s 200m finals where he finished eighth in the world after running 20.53 in the finals. During round one, Charamba automatically qualified for semifinals after finishing second in his heat (20.27). In the semifinals he ran 20.31 which was good enough to earn a spot in the 200m finals. Representing their home country of Nigeria, Ajayi and Ashe raced in the 100m dash and the 4x100m relay. In the first round of competition, Ajayi was the first to cross the line in his heat (10.02) and easily qualified for semifinals. After running 10.16, Ashe was also granted a spot. Ajayi and Ashe placed sixth in their semi-final heats with the former running 10.08 and the latter running 10.13. The Nigerian duo raced on the team’s 4x100m relay where they finished seventh in their heat, running a season’s best time of 38.20. Azeem Fahmi (Malaysia) competed in the 100m where he ran 10.42 in the preliminary round and 10.45 in round one. 2024 U20 World Athletic Championships In late August, Tharp wrapped up his outstanding rookie campaign by claiming gold at the World Athletics U20 Championships in the 110m hurdles, crossing in 13.05. In the preliminary rounds, Tharp won Tharp won his opening round heat in 13.23 advancing to semifinals. The American ran an even quicker time in semifinals (13.11) where he easily won his heat to secure a spot in the championship round. Also competing at the U20 World Championships held in Lima, Peru, freshman Marley Raikiwasa also medaled, taking bronze in the women’s discus throw. After placing third in her qualification group (52.47m), Raikiwasa toss of 56.25m solidified a third-place showing and Auburn’s second medal at the championships.
