In 1932 halfback Jimmy Hitchcock made Auburn history by becoming the first player to earn All-America honors. Eighty-nine years later, Roger McCreary continued the legacy of Auburn greats by becoming a first team All-American on three different lists in 2021. The first cornerback to earn All-America honors since Chris Davis in 2013, McCreary was placed on the Associated Press, The Athletic and ESPN first teams. n Seventy-two Tiger players have combined for 81 first team All-America honors. End Jimmy Phillips is Auburn’s most celebrated All-American, making 11 teams in 1957. Pat Sullivan, Terry Beasley, Bo Jackson and Tracy Rocker were each named to 10 teams in a single season. n Auburn has had 22 seasons with multiple All-Americans and nine seasons with three or more. Carnell Williams Karlos Dansby Terry BeasleyTOWARD THE PURCHASE OF A MANUFACTURED HOME $75,000 During select SEC games this year, if Auburn returns their first received kick of the second half for a touchdown or scores on the first three plays after that kick, one lucky fan could win up to $75,000 toward the purchase of a new manufactured home from an AMHA retailer. 64 ON THE PLAINS WITH AVERY JONES After two years as a starter at center for the East Carolina Pirates and a vet- eran of play in both Conference USA and the ACC, graduate transfer Avery Jones has come to Auburn to see what life along the offensive line is like in the SEC. The affable student-athlete is ex- cited because he already loves Auburn and has always loved football. “Where I’m from – Havelock, North Carolina – it’s a football small town,” Jones proudly proclaimed of his home- town Havelock Rams, who won the Coastal 3A conference championship and were state runners-up during his career. “Before I got to the high school, they had won three state championships in a row. We’ve got a lot of tradition in football. “My mom Sandra and her side of the family (the Fraziers) are big football fans, so I have a lot of uncles and cousins who played football.” Why did Jones choose Auburn as his home for the next leg of his journey? “I wanted to be at a place where football really matters, and Auburn is that spot,” he said. “The fans, the envi- ronment, the stadium and to get to play against teams like Georgia and Alabama – that’s living a dream for me. “When I decided to hit the portal, I was originally committed to Illinois, but Hugh Freeze called me, and I took a visit. I loved the facilities and what the coaches were telling me about the de- velopment of the offensive line and what I could do for the program. “I came to Auburn in January and I settled in pretty well right away. All the coaches were real inviting to me, so it didn’t seem too hard to get to know peo- ple,” explained Jones, who transferred from North Carolina to East Carolina af- ter two seasons. “In a transition, getting to know people is what I think is most im- portant when you go to a new spot. “I’m a global studies major and I’m taking classes for a second undergrad degree here at Auburn. At North Caro- lina, I was a sports administration major, but when I got to East Carolina, I didn’t have enough credits that would transfer, so I got my degree in communications. I like sports and want to stay involved in some fashion, maybe as a coach, a strength coach or a personal trainer after I finish playing. “After I graduated from ECU, I want- ed to go for a new challenge,” said Jones, who received his bachelor’s degree from East Carolina last December, add- ing that many players take advantage of the NCAA transfer portal for positive reasons that aren’t always portrayed that way to the fans. “People just hold a strong love for their particular school, and they can’t fathom that the players would look for something else.” Jones’ goals factored into his decision to become an Auburn Tiger. “I want to get drafted and go to the NFL. I have all those goals and that’s one of the main reasons I left ECU. I felt like I needed to challenge myself on the big- gest stage and prove myself against the best of the best.” And things have been working out for the best for Jones so far. “I’ve been really happy with my choice of coming to Auburn,” he said of his experience since January. “I love the South and am glad to stay in the South, so it wasn’t a huge transition from North Carolina to Alabama. “Auburn is a nice relaxing area – it’s got a lot of little food spots, so I bring my girlfriend Ayanna out to eat a lot. She graduated from North Carolina and lives here with me. She just took her MCATs and is applying to med schools. Otherwise, I like playing video games and I like watching barbeque shows. I like to say I can cook a little bit and I like barbeque.” The Jones household also includes a pampered pet. “I’ve got a little black pomapoo that weighs 10 pounds named Ash. He’s about 2 years old. People often laugh at me when I walk around with him, and he does have a little Auburn jersey he will wear on gamedays.” ON THE PLAINS WITH AVERY JONES BY SHELLY POE AUBURNTIGERS.COM ‘LIVING A DREAM’Business Friends Working for the Future of Auburn 334.321.2321 | brightinvestments.com Auburn, AL | Memphis, TN | Nashville, TN | Tampa, FL WAR EAGLE!
