In 1932 halfback Jimmy Hitchcock made Auburn history by becoming the first player to earn All-America honors. Eighty-nine years later, Roger McCreary continued the legacy of Auburn greats by becoming a first team All-American on three different lists in 2021. The first cornerback to earn All-America honors since Chris Davis in 2013, McCreary was placed on the Associated Press, The Athletic and ESPN first teams. n Seventy-two Tiger players have combined for 81 first team All-America honors. End Jimmy Phillips is Auburn’s most celebrated All-American, making 11 teams in 1957. Pat Sullivan, Terry Beasley, Bo Jackson and Tracy Rocker were each named to 10 teams in a single season. n Auburn has had 22 seasons with multiple All-Americans and nine seasons with three or more. Carnell Williams Karlos Dansby Terry BeasleyTOWARD THE PURCHASE OF A MANUFACTURED HOME $75,000 During select SEC games this year, if Auburn returns their first received kick of the second half for a touchdown or scores on the first three plays after that kick, one lucky fan could win up to $75,000 toward the purchase of a new manufactured home from an AMHA retailer. 64 AUBURN BEING AUBURN Punt Bama Punt. Bo Over the Top. Prayer in Jordan-Hare. Kick Six. There are moments in Auburn football history that fans will remember forever. They know exactly where they were when Bo Jackson jumped over the pile to beat Alabama in 1982. They know exactly where they were when Chris Davis caught the field goal attempt and took off running the other way or when Nick Marshall threw up a prayer on fourth down. Those moments … that is Auburn Being Auburn. “There goes Davis! Davis is going to run it all the way back! Auburn is going to win the football game! Auburn is go- ing to win the football game! He ran the missed field goal back! He ran it back 109 yards! They’re not going to keep them off the field tonight! Holy Cow! Oh my God! Auburn wins!” Ten years later, that call from Rod Bramblett still brings chills to Auburn fans. How do you forget a moment like that? The referees put an extra second back on the clock to give Alabama one last chance to try a long field goal. Gus Malzahn called timeout and decided to stick Chris Davis under the goal post to return the kick if it came up short. There was no way he could actually run it back, though, right? Wrong. Davis caught it, took off toward the Auburn sideline, and once he crossed midfield, there was nobody catching him. He was gone. The Kick Six was born. From the magnitude of the game – a spot in the SEC Championship and ultimately the national championship was on the line – to how it transpired with both teams trading blows for 60 minutes to the sheer insanity of how it ended, it’s the most iconic moment or play in col- lege football history. And it might never be topped. But Auburn has a history of giving its fans those big moments. Two weeks earlier, it was the Prayer at Jordan-Hare. The Kick Six might not have ever happened if Ricardo Louis doesn’t catch a 73-yard touchdown pass on fourth down that was deflected by two Georgia defenders before landing in his arms. In 2010, it was Cam Newton’s touch- down run against LSU. His Heisman mo- ment. Later that season it was Newton’s touchdown pass to Philip Lutzenkirchen in Tuscaloosa, capping the largest come- back win for Auburn in Iron Bowl history and keeping the undefeated season alive. In 1982, it was a freshman running back leaping over the line of scrimmage to convert on fourth down and score the go-ahead touchdown against Alabama. Auburn snapped a nine-game losing streak to Alabama, and the legend of Bo Jackson took off. In 1972, it was two blocked punts in the final minutes, both returned for touchdowns, propelling Auburn to yet another memorable win over in-state ri- val Alabama. Punt, Bama, Punt. “It was a miracle that was not sup- posed to happen,” former Auburn ath- letics director and sports information director David Housel said. “Kind of like the Kick Six, it wasn’t supposed to happen, but it did. In this case you had two unbelievable back-to-back punts blocked for touchdowns. An ending for the ages.” Auburn will always be a special place because of the tradition and because of the passion of the fans and the family connection. But Auburn is also a special place because of the moments.
