In 1932 halfback Jimmy Hitchcock made Auburn history by becoming the first player to earn All-America honors. Eighty-nine years later, Roger McCreary continued the legacy of Auburn greats by becoming a first team All-American on three different lists in 2021. The first cornerback to earn All-America honors since Chris Davis in 2013, McCreary was placed on the Associated Press, The Athletic and ESPN first teams. n Seventy-two Tiger players have combined for 81 first team All-America honors. End Jimmy Phillips is Auburn’s most celebrated All-American, making 11 teams in 1957. Pat Sullivan, Terry Beasley, Bo Jackson and Tracy Rocker were each named to 10 teams in a single season. n Auburn has had 22 seasons with multiple All-Americans and nine seasons with three or more. I interviewed for the job. I accepted the job, went on our honeymoon, came back, drove straight down there and started working camps for them,” said Aldridge, Auburn’s linebackers coach. In a decade of marriage, the Aldridges have lived in eight houses. “It’s been a climb,” said Aldridge, recounting his four Divi- sion II coaching stops before joining head coach Hugh Freeze at Liberty from 2019-2022, first as defensive line coach, then as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. That climb has taken Aldridge from his first job as a graduate assistant at D-II Lindenwood in St. Louis to the Southeastern Conference in a 10-year span. “I grew up watching the conference,” said the native of Jackson, Tennessee. “It’s pretty cool to be a part of it.” Aldridge originally aspired to be an attorney, but coaching was his calling. “I always loved ball,” he said. “I looked around at people I looked up to and all of them were coaches.” Aldridge credits his high school coach in west Tennessee and his position coach at Harding University for influencing him. “I saw how they got the best out of people,” he said. “That’s the reason I got into it, to serve and to get the most out of peo- ple.” Aldridge’s four seasons at Liberty give him insight into Au- burn head coach Hugh Freeze. “He wakes up every day thinking about how he can make Auburn better,” Aldridge said. “He is so consistent. You’re go- ing to get the same Hugh Freeze every single day. “How he interacts with the players. He’s the best I’ve been around at building relationships with those guys and having an open-door policy.” Freeze impressed Aldridge by relinquishing play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery, a skill that helped Freeze ascend from coaching high school football to the SEC. “Being selfless so he has more time to spend with the play- ers, which is a really big deal,” Aldridge said. “The Auburn family can rest assured that he wakes up every day thinking how he can make it better inside and outside this building.” One of the best ways to make Auburn football better is through recruiting, something at which Freeze and Aldridge have excelled in their first year together on the Plains when pitching their message to prospective student-athletes. “They get an opportunity to create an impact,” Aldridge said. “Very rarely can you go somewhere that has tradition, but you can still make a big enough impact yourself and stand out. You can be part of it that turned it back to how it was. “Auburn sells itself. Once they come on campus and see the commitment to excellence in our facilities and our staff, it’s not much selling on my part.” The Aldridges were both student-athletes at Harding; Jes- sica played volleyball and Josh twice earned all-conference honors. Along with their children, Braxton and Nora, they hope to model family life for Auburn’s linebackers. “As much as I can have my family around them and the play- ers see how I interact with them,” Aldridge said. “It’s great for them to see that. I tell my guys all the time. You can learn les- sons from me. I promise you my family is learning lessons from you. It all goes together.” Aldridge knows each day brings an opportunity for his stu- dent-athletes to develop. “I enjoy the progress and the process,” he said. “I enjoy see- ing guys figure things out. I enjoy practice way more than I en- joy the games. The games are just the icing on the cake for me. It’s the practice and the grind of it and the time spent together that I enjoy the most. “Saturdays are awesome but I enjoy it equally being here at Auburn Sunday through Friday.” JOSH ALDRIDGE BY JEFF SHEARER AUBURNTIGERS.COM MEET THE COACHES: AUBURN LINEBACKERS COACHBusiness Friends Working for the Future of Auburn 334.321.2321 | brightinvestments.com Auburn, AL | Memphis, TN | Nashville, TN | Tampa, FL WAR EAGLE!
