< PreviousOLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 101 Starting over. It’s become the norm in women’s basketball, if not all collegiate sports these days. And for new Auburn head coach Larry Vickers, it’s an opportunity to build a program from the ground up. Hired in late March as the ninth leader of Auburn women’s basketball, Vickers is looking forward to the challenge. “It’s been a good five, six months,” Vickers said at SEC Basketball Media Days earlier this month. “We’re continuing to grow, build relationships in the community, as well as build relationships with some of the best recruits in the country.” It was a whirlwind first few months as Vickers was tasked with putting together not only a new coaching staff, but also build a team nearly from scratch. Gone are all five starters and all but two players from last year’s team – only one of whom appeared in an SEC game in 2024-25. But Vickers knows he will lean on the experience of his two returners, redshirt junior Kaitlyn Duhon and sophomore Syriah Daniels. Duhon, a 5-10 guard, is regarded as one of the top returning defenders in the SEC. Last season, before suffering an injury in late November, Duhon had averaged 7.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game, scoring in double- figures in three of eight games played. Vickers believes Duhon can be a leader on and off the court. “She’s extremely vocal,” he said. “Kait is one of those players that talks a lot. She’s going to let you know exactly how she feels. You need people like that … she doesn’t mind bringing them in the huddles.” Daniels, a 6-0 forward from Auburn, saw extended minutes as a true freshman last year, playing in 28 games with six starts. She came through when needed most against UAB when, with several key players injured and just eight players dressed, she scored a career-high 14 points in her first collegiate start to lead the Tigers to a come-from-behind win. “Syriah has been a player, for me, that you’ll be like, ‘That’s an LV type of kid,’” Vickers said. “She can play multiple positions. She understands the value and tradition at Auburn.” Ten newcomers join the Auburn roster this year – seven Division I transfers, one junior college transfer and two true freshmen. Sophomore Khady Leye and junior Ja’Mia Harris look to lead the way among the Tiger newcomers. Leye, a 6-2 forward, comes to Auburn from Towson, where she was a CAA All-Rookie selection last year. The Senegal native averaged 9.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game as a true freshman. “Khady, she’s a player that some forwards in our league are going to hate to defend,” Vickers said. “She can play inside-out, stretch the floor.” Harris, a 5-11 guard, came to the Plains from Texas State, where she started 28 games last season and averaged 10.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. “There’s going to be some games Ja’Mia Harris doesn’t shoot the ball as well as she might like, but she’s a guard that’s tough enough to get seven to 10 rebounds,” Vickers said. Other Division I transfers include senior guards Angena Belloso (FIU), Mya Petticord (Rutgers), and A’riel Jackson (Cincinnati), junior center Quanirah Montague (Mississippi State) and redshirt freshman center Arek Angui (UCF). Junior forward Clara Koulibaly joins from the juco ranks, and true freshmen Harissoum Coulibaly and Sania Richardson round out the roster. “I tell everybody one thing about our locker room: they want to be good,” Vickers said. “They want to be successful. They want to make me look good. As we kind of go through this, just going through the roller coaster, going through the ups and downs, they’re ready for it.” OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL BY: WES TODD AUBURNTIGERS.COM TIGERS’ REVAMPED ROSTER READY FOR VICKERS’ FIRST SEASONAUBURN SPORTS PROPERTIES 103 AUBURNTIGERS.COM Auburn Sports Properties is owned and operated by Playfly, the official worldwide marketer of Auburn University Athletics.
