In 1932 halfback Jimmy Hitchcock made Auburn history by becoming the first player to earn All-America honors. Eighty-nine years later, Roger McCreary continued the legacy of Auburn greats by becoming a first team All-American on three different lists in 2021. The first cornerback to earn All-America honors since Chris Davis in 2013, McCreary was placed on the Associated Press, The Athletic and ESPN first teams. n Seventy-two Tiger players have combined for 81 first team All-America honors. End Jimmy Phillips is Auburn’s most celebrated All-American, making 11 teams in 1957. Pat Sullivan, Terry Beasley, Bo Jackson and Tracy Rocker were each named to 10 teams in a single season. n Auburn has had 22 seasons with multiple All-Americans and nine seasons with three or more. Carnell Williams Karlos Dansby Terry BeasleyTOWARD THE PURCHASE OF A MANUFACTURED HOME $75,000 During select SEC games this year, if Auburn returns their first received kick of the second half for a touchdown or scores on the first three plays after that kick, one lucky fan could win up to $75,000 toward the purchase of a new manufactured home from an AMHA retailer. 64 ON THE PLAINS WITH JACOB QUATTLEBAUM His day began at 4 a.m. Central time, four days a week. Breakfast and a commute later, he was at work by 7 a.m. Eastern time. After a 10-hour day, he came back to Auburn for workouts and conditioning. Such was Jacob Quattlebaum’s life during the summer of 2023. An intern- ship necessitated an hour’s commute and a 40-hour work week Monday through Thursday, then getting in extra work in the football complex over the weekend. “Seven days a week, I’m working,” Quattlebaum said in July of juggling re- sponsibilities. “It’s a balance game. But since I got to Auburn, I’ve made myself take on as many roles and responsibili- ties as possible, just so I can prepare for times like these.” A 2022 Auburn graduate with a de- gree in electrical engineering, the Tigers’ long snapper spent the summer as a test engineer intern with Georgia Power in Columbus. In the meantime, he is also pursuing his master’s degree in business administration from the Harbert College of Business. “A lot of it is learning some of those technical skills,” he said. “And a lot of it is trying to figure out if that’s a company I want to be with. Hopefully when I’m able to move into more of an administrator role, which is what I want to do in the fu- ture, with that MBA in finance degree, I can speak on all levels – being able to talk to the people on the ground level out in the field, doing the work and the techni- cal stuff, and then speak the language of corporate administrators.” Part of his MBA program included a trip to South Africa in March, where he and his cohort spent 10 days studying in- ternational business. Preparation for the trip included learning everything possible about business operations in that country – legal, environmental and cultural issues – along with their operations from the in- ternational down to the local level. “They do a good job of helping you plan and prep,” Quattlebaum said of the Auburn MBA program. “You’re pre- paring to fully understand what you’re getting yourself into when you go there. If you ever have to go by yourself, you should know these things. “Once we got over there, we were scheduled to meet with different com- panies each day. We had meetings planned with about eight different busi- nesses, stretching from J.P. Morgan all the way down to a local cookie company. We met anybody and everybody that we could in order to get a full grasp of it, and then understand that if, in the future, I want to work in international business, I know what to do moving forward.” As with his summer internship, the overseas trip involved coordination and accommodation to his football schedule – an issue which has previously been a barrier to student-athletes pursuing cer- tain advanced degrees. With the overseas trip scheduled months in advance, arrangements had been made for Quattlebaum to be back in time for the start of spring practice. But when head coach Hugh Freeze’s new coaching staff took over, the prac- tice schedule changed, and spring ball started before the cohort’s return from South Africa. “We kind of had to maneuver a way to work around that,” he said. “But a lot of what we’re doing is working with admin- istration on both sides, academic and athletic, to find more opportunities for student-athletes to engage in these pro- grams. It’s one of those classes I’ve got- ten more out of at Auburn, just because of how detailed everything is.” Another opportunity Quattlebaum used to his advantage has been his work with Auburn’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He served as pres- ident of that group in 2021-22 and was asked to serve on various SEC commit- tees through that role. He was selected as the spring 2022 winner among all Auburn male student-athletes of the PNC Achiev- ers Award, saluting well-rounded achieve- ment in leadership, academics, communi- ty engagement and competition. “Working with the SEC groups and the Auburn SAAC gave me so many op- portunities to grow during my time at Auburn,” Quattlebaum said of his volun- teer efforts. “From leadership and net- working to serving the Auburn commu- nity, I grew as a student-athlete and as an Auburn Man. I owe those committees and opportunities so much for the help they provided in making me the person I am today.” While he keeps his academic pursuits at the forefront, Quattlebaum still has unfinished business on the football field. And as one of the longest-tenured long snappers around, he’s not ruling out a shot at the NFL. “Long snapping is kind of different,” he said. “You only need one guy for ev- ery team in the league, and most teams have a vet they’re going to stick with. So, there might be two or three openings in the league. But I’ve talked to coach- es that have connections in the league, and they talk to coaches all the time. So, I’ve been working with those guys and talking to them about what the future looks like – what do I need to work on in order to take that next step and be one of those 32 guys?” As his Auburn career winds down, part of what Quattlebaum has tried to do in his sixth year in the Auburn locker room is mentor younger players about time management and academic pur- suits outside of football. “I’ve tried my best to explain it,” the SEC academic honor roll honoree said. “I like to mentor as well as a I can. It’s tough because everybody’s a little bit different. But to share some of what I’ve learned over the past six years being here, I tell the young guys to get involved with whatever you can. So, you’re not just an athlete, you’re not just a student, you’re a well-rounded individual once you leave here.” ON THE PLAINS WITH JACOB QUATTLEBAUM BY WES TODD AUBURNTIGERS.COM TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITYBusiness Friends Working for the Future of Auburn 334.321.2321 | brightinvestments.com Auburn, AL | Memphis, TN | Nashville, TN | Tampa, FL WAR EAGLE!
