< Previous2022 LOUISVILLE FOOTBALL GoCards.com | @UofLFootball 39 MEDIA PREVIEW TEAM COACHES REVIEW HONORS PROS RECORDS U OF L T he Louisville area owes its existence to the Falls of the Ohio, the only place where the 981-mile Ohio River flows over bedrock. The falls were really a rapids where the river dropped about 27 feet in three miles, usually blocking passage by boat. Early explorers recognized the strategic importance of the Falls. George Rogers Clark established the first settlement there in 1778, to use as a base of his invasion of British territory in Southern Illinois and Indi- ana. Two years later that settlement became Louisville -- named for King Louis XVI of France, who was supporting the American Revolution. Louisville quickly became a vital trans- portation center for the young nation. Ports were establish above and below the Falls. Passengers and freight moved over- land around the rapids. Trails and roads connected the ports to inland settlements in Kentucky and Indiana. The steamboat brought prosperity and growth to the area; by 1850, Louisville was the 10th-largest city in the nation. In the decades that followed, railroads greatly improved connections with cities throughout the nation, and Louisville became known as the “Gateway to the South.” Busi- nesses and industries were attracted by the strong and convenient transportation network and Louisville became an industrial center. In recent years, the economy of the Louisville area has shifted from a heavy reli- ance on industry to an increasing emphasis on services, including earning a worldwide reputation as a transportation and distribu- tion center. Once again, location is a key factor. Louisville is located near the center of the eastern half of the contiguous 48 states, with nearly half of the nation’s con- sumer markets within a 500-mile radius. The climate is mild enough that Louisville’s airport is rarely closed because of weather. Climate, location and a good transporta- tion system helped convince United Parcel Service to establish its national hub in Louisville in the early 1980s. UPS, in turn, is attracting businesses that depend on fast and efficient transportation of their goods to other parts of the nation and throughout the world. The Kentucky Center for the Arts is one of the nation’s premier performing arts facilities, housing three spacious theatres. Sports, including UofL athletics, are an important facet of life in the Louisville area. Churchill Downs has hosted three Breed- ers’ Cups and continues its traditional Run For The Roses -- the Kentucky Derby -- the first Saturday each May. The 1996, 2000 and 2014 PGA Championships were staged at Valhalla Golf Course in eastern Jefferson County, which was also the site of the 2008 Ryder Cup international competition. The Louisville Bats, the triple-A baseball team of the Cincinnati Reds, have drawn over 1 mil- lion fans to games in a single season with Slugger Field stationed on the downtown riverfront. Over 140 public parks, 20 public golf courses and 226 public tennis courts also provide outdoor entertainment. Yet even though Louisville has changed through the years, it still has the flavor and gentleness of a Southern town. The Belle of Louisville steamboat still paddles its way up and down the Ohio River daily, mint juleps are still served under an old oak tree during the hot and muggy summers and fishing in the many lakes and rivers of Louisville and surrounding counties is still a favorite pastime. Another favorite in Louisville is trying to figure out the correct pronunciation of the city. So if you’re a tourist, don’t say Louie-ville or Lewis-ville. Natives claim it’s Lou-a-vuhl. Either way, Louisville is still the same happy place. "The Ville" has been labeled as the Best College Sports Town in America CITY OF LOUISVILLECardinal Stadium History of T he University of Louisville’s Cardinal Stadium hosted its first game on September 5, 1998, fol- lowing two years of construction, but the story behind the new stadium began more than a decade earlier. Louisville head coach Howard Schnellenberger began talking about the eventual need for a new stadium as soon as he took over the Cardinals program in December 1984. Neither the University of Louisville nor the City of Louisville had ever had a major football stadium. From the inception of Louisville’s football program in 1912, the Cardinals had always played their home games on high school fields or in minor league baseball stadiums. A perpetual lack of state funding stalled plans for a new stadium until 1993, when local banker Malcolm Chancey formed a stadium committee to begin a fund drive aimed at building the stadium with- out state financing. Louisville fans were the source of the first $15 million, purchasing lifetime seat licenses in the proposed stadium. In December 1994, Kentucky Governor Brereton Jones announced a deal with CSX Transportation to trade state-owned property for a 92-acre rail yard south of UofL’s Belknap Campus to be used as a site for a new UofL football stadium. With a site secured, UofL continued raising private donations for the $56.7 million construction cost. A local bond issue was budgeted to raise $18 million and corporate donations added another $17 million through April 1996. The final fundraising push came in May 1996 from John Schnatter, founder of Papa John’s Pizza, who pledged $5 million for his company to have stadium naming rights for 15 years. With funding finalized, stadium construction began in the fall of 1996 following a ceremonial groundbreaking on June 19. After five years of private fundraising and construction, Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium opened on schedule for the 1998 season as a capacity crowd of 42,643 endured a humid 91-degree afternoon for the inaugural game. The Cards lost 68-34 to Kentucky in a contest that featured 1,302 yards of total offense and 14 touchdowns, but they won the remaining five games on their new home field that year. Expansions in 2010 and 2018 increased stadium capacity to 55,000 and 60,800, respectively. UofL renamed the stadium as Cardinal Stadium in July 2018. The Cardinals completed a $63.25 million dollar expansion of the stadium in 2018. In the recent construction, approximately 6,000 seats were added, providing a unique look in the end zone structure and increasing the total capacity to about 60,000. The construction also generated an additional 25,000 square feet of space. The expansion included 800 modern club seats, 68 premium loge level boxes, and 12 exclusive field level suites. In 2010, over 10,000 additional chairback seats were added to a second deck on the east side of the stadium in the UPS Flight Deck. The project included 33 new luxury suites on the Stites & Harbison Suite Level and 2,000 premium loge seats were added to the east side. A 60-foot wide Norton’s Terrace was constructed at the top of the south end zone, connecting the east and west sides of the stadium. A part of the previous expansion was the PNC Club, a 20,000-square- foot, glass-enclosed area that stretches from end zone to end zone at the loge level on the east side of the stadium. The temperature-controlled club features a full-service bar, con- cessions, large-screen televisions, lounge seating and tables. It has more than 1,700 outdoor seats under cover with heaters and fans. 2022 LOUISVILLE FOOTBALL 40 GoCards.com | @UofLFootball MEDIA PREVIEW TEAM COACHES REVIEW HONORS PROS RECORDS U OF L2022 LOUISVILLE FOOTBALL GoCards.com | @UofLFootball 41 MEDIA PREVIEW TEAM COACHES REVIEW HONORS PROS RECORDS U OF LCARDINAL STADIUM RECORDS 2022 LOUISVILLE FOOTBALL 42 GoCards.com | @UofLFootball MEDIA PREVIEW TEAM COACHES REVIEW HONORS PROS RECORDS U OF L Attendance: 58,187 Notre Dame Sept. 2, 2019 17-35 L Total Plays: 93 Connecticut Nov. 24, 2012 20-23 W 93 Syracuse Sept. 22, 2007 35-38 L Total Yards: 779 Houston Nov. 22, 2003 66-45 W Rushing Attempts: 55 Connecticut Nov. 24, 2012 20-23 W 55 Kentucky Sept. 3, 2006 59-28 W Rushing Yards: 445 Houston Nov. 22, 2003 66-45 W Rushing Touchdowns: 7 Florida State Sept. 17, 2016 63-20 W 7 Florida Atlantic Oct. 1, 2005 61-10 W 7 Houston Nov. 22, 2003 66-45 W Pass Attempts: 65 Connecticut Nov. 24, 2012 20-23 W 65 Syracuse Sept. 22, 2007 35-38 L Pass Completions: 45 Syracuse Sept. 22, 2007 35-38 L Passing Yards: 555 Syracuse Sept. 22, 2007 35-38 L Completion Percentage: 84.6 Kentucky Sept. 2, 2012 32-14 W Passing Touchdowns: 8 Charlotte Sept. 1, 2016 70-14 W Touchdowns Scored: 10 Charlotte Sept. 1, 2016 70-14 W 10 Florida International Sept. 21, 2013 72-0 W 10 Murray State Aug. 30, 2007 73-10 W 10 Cincinnati Nov. 27, 2004 70-7 W Field Goals: 4 North Carolina State Oct. 22, 2016 54-13 W 4 Connecticut Oct. 23, 2010 26-0 W 4 Pittsburgh Nov. 3, 2005 42-20 W Extra Points: 10 Charlotte Sept. 1, 2016 70-14 W 10 Murray State Aug. 30, 2007 73-10 W 10 Cincinnati Nov. 27, 2004 70-7 W Points by Kicking: 18 North Carolina State Oct. 22, 2016 54-13 W Fumbles Lost: 4 Kentucky Sept. 2, 2000 40-34 W Turnovers: 5 West Virginia Nov. 22, 2008 21-35 L 5 Kentucky Aug. 31, 2008 2-27 L Penalties: 18 Tulane Oct. 28, 2000 35-32 W 18 Connecticut Sept. 30, 2000 41-22 W 18 Cincinnati Oct. 3, 1998 62-19 W Penalty Yards: 161 Connecticut Sept. 30, 2000 41-22 W Total Plays: 97 Tulane Oct. 28, 2000 35-32 W Total Yards: 801 Kentucky Sept. 5, 1998 34-68 L Rushing Attempts: 68 New Mexico State Aug. 23, 2001 45-24 W Rushing Yards: 542 Georgia Tech Oct. 5, 2018 31-66 L Rushing Touchdowns: 8 Georgia Tech Oct. 5, 2018 31-66 L Pass Attempts: 72 Tulane Oct. 28, 2000 35-32 W Pass Completions: 43 Tulane Oct. 28, 2000 35-32 W Passing Yards: 571 Kentucky Sept. 5, 1998 34-68 L Completion Percentage: 100.0 Virginia Tech Oct. 31, 2020 35-42 L Passing Touchdowns: 8 Kentucky Sept. 5, 1998 34-68 L Touchdowns Scored: 9 Georgia Tech Oct. 5, 2018 31-66 L 9 Kentucky Sept. 5, 1998 34-68 L Field Goals: 4 Miami, Fla.
