The Cardinals will have 29 total practices before opening the season against Syracuse on Sept. 3. The Cardinals bring back 17 starters from a team that went 6-7 and lost to Air Force in the First Responder Bowl. Seven starters are back from an offense that averaged 31.6 points per game, scor- ing 30 or more points in seven games last season, including 62 in a win over Duke. Louisville averaged 209.8 yards on the ground and ranked 21st in the country in total offense at 448.6 yards per game. Quarterback Malik Cunningham is set to begin his fourth-year as a starter after throwing for a career high 2,941 yards and 19 touchdowns, while becoming the second quarterback in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season. The fifth-year senior ran for 1,034 yards and 20 touchdowns. Louisville returns four starters on the offensive line, including first team All- American Caleb Chandler, who was also named first team All-ACC. Tackles Trevor Reid and Renato Brown are also back along with guard Adonis Boone. Tight end Marshon Ford returns after leading the team in receiving with 49 catch- es for 550 yards and two scores. Ahmari Huggins-Bruce, a rookie last season, is back after catching 29 passes for 444 yards and four touchdowns. The offense added transfer running back Tiyon Evans from Tennessee, wide receivers Dee Wiggins from Miami and Tyler Hudson from Central Arkansas. If the Cardinals are going to get back to their winning ways, they have to get better on defense where 10 starters return includ- ing outside linebacker Yasir Abdullah — a second team All-ACC performer. The senior from Miami led the team with 10.0 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss. The 10 sacks are the most by a player since 2015. On the defensive line, Yaya Diaby is the veteran returning after recording 39 tackles and 1.5 sacks and Ashton Gillotte, a second-year player who recorded four sacks as a rookie. Dorian Jones returns in the middle after recording 48 tackles and Monty Montgom- ery is another playmaker who is returning after suffering a season-ending injury early last season. The secondary faces the most questions with three starters returning in Kei’Trel Clark, Chandler Jones and Kenderick Dun- can. Jones, a fifth-year player, posted 40 tackles from his cornerback spot, and Dun- can was third on the team with 77 tackles and one interception in his first season after transferring from Georgia Southern. The Cards added M.J. Griffin, a transfer from Temple, who added 65 tackles last season. Key Notes To Consider For the third-straight season, the Cardi- nals were balanced on the offensive side of the football, averaging 236.4 yards through the air and 209.8 yards on the ground. Lou- isville is the only team in the nation to aver- age over 200 yards rushing and 200 yards passing over the last three seasons. The Cardinals finished the season ranked 22nd nationally in rushing offense after averaging 209.8 yards per game. Quarterback Malik Cunningham became only the second quarterback in school his- tory to rush for 1,000 yards in a season and just the 17th player to rush for 1,000-yards in a season when he finished the year with 1,031 yards. Offensive guard Caleb Chandler was the lone Louisville player to earn first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference accolades, becoming the first offensive lineman to gar- ner top honors since 2019. The Cardinals recorded 33 sacks on the season, the most for the program since totaling 30 during the 2016 season. Line- backer Yasir Abdullah finished second in the ACC with 10.0 sacks. Tight end Marshon Ford, a third team All-ACC selection, led the team with 49 receptions for 550 yards and a pair of touchdowns — all career highs. The Louis- ville native has 15 career touchdowns since earning a scholarship in 2019. The Cardinals averaged 5.5 yards a carry on the ground, which ranked fifth nation- ally following the bowl game. Opening the Season with Conference Game The Cardinals open the 2022 with a conference game at Syracuse. The Atantic Coast Conference opener marks the first time since the 2014 season that UofL opens with a conference game — when the Cards played their first ACC game versus Miami. The Cards won 31-13 at Cardinal Stadium en route to a 9-4 season and a 5-3 record in the ACC. Transfer Portal Options Louisville hit the transfer portal hard with the addition of 9 different players signing for the 2022 season. Here are the transfers who join the roster this year. CB Jarvis Brownlee (Florida State) RB Tiyon Evans (Tennessee) S M.J. Griffin (Temple) S Nicario Harper (Jacksonville State) WR Tyler Hudson (Central Arkansas) DL Jermayne Lole (Arizona State) CB Quincy Riley (Middle Tennessee) LB Momo Sanogo (Mississippi) WR Dee Wiggins (Miami) Evans, Griffin, Hudson, Sanogo and Wig- gins have all joined the Cardinals for spring practice this season. The Cardinals fell vic- tim to six losses to the transfer portal in wide receivers Demetrius Cannon and Tyler Harrell, running back Aidan Robbins, defen- sive backs Kani Walker and T.J. Lewis and offensive lineman Tim Lawson. Cunningham’s Historic Night Versus Duke Quarterback Malik Cunningham made history in the Cardinals’ 62-22 win over Duke last season. Cunningham accounted for seven touchdowns, five through the air and two on the ground, and threw for 303 yards while adding 224 rushing yards. He became the second player in FBS his- tory to pass for at least 300 yards and rush for at least 200 yards in the same game, joining Washington’s Marques Tuiasosopo, who did so in 1999. Cunningham ran the ball 11 times and completed 18-of-25 passes. His rushing scores were for 44 and 72 yards in the second quarter. All five of his passing touchdowns went to different receivers. Under his guidance, the Cardinals have ranked in the top 25 in total offense in all three seasons and in the top 30 in rushing. Louisville averaged 33.1 points per game and 448.6 yards of total offense in 2019 — all personal bests. Louisville has been known for big plays under Satterfield, as both the 2019 and 2021 teams each averaged 6.68 yards per game. Satterfield’s teams have averaged 31.4 points per game under his watch and have scored over 30 points in 19 games. Ford One of the Top Tight Ends Tight end Marshon Ford, a former walk- on, has been a weapon in the passing game over the last three seasons. He’s emerged as one of the ACC’s top tight ends with 49 receptions (career high) for 550 yards (career high) and two touchdowns after recording six catches for 68 yards verus Kentucky. The sophomore has caught a pass in 23-straight games dating back to the final game of the 2019 season. Ford, a third-team all-ACC selection, led the league in receptions by a tight end with 49. Ford’s 550 yards was second among tight ends within the league. For his career, Ford has caught 94 passes for 1,151 yards since earning a scholarship prior to the 2019 season. During his first year, Ford caught 20 passes for 292 yards and seven scores and added 25 receptions for 309 yards and six scores. In 2020, Ford was tied for second among tight ends with six scores, finishing behind Miami’s Brevin Jordan, who had seven. NC State’s Cary Angeline and Virginia’s Tony Pol- jan were tied with Ford with those six scores. Ford ranks third on the school’s all-time list for receiving touchdowns by a tight end with 15. Cunningham Can Run The Cards have an added weapon in the running game with quarterback Malik Cunningham. The fourth-year starter led the team in rushing with 1,031 yards and tied for fourth nationally with 20 rushing touch- downs. Cunningham tied for third on UofL’s single-season list for rushing touchdowns with 20. The Montgomery, Ala., native became only the second quarterback in school his- tory to rush for 1,000 yards in a season and just the 17th player to rush for 1,000-yards in a season. Cunningham rushed for a career high three scores in the win over Boston College and two versus Duke, the eighth time this season and the 10th time in his career that he ran for multiple touchdowns in a game. The 10 multiple rushing touchdown games are the second most in school history next to the 15 by former Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson. Cunningham has rushed for 38 in his career, which stands fourth in school history. The redshirt senior rushed for 224 rush- ing yards against Duke, which was the ninth-most all-time in a single game by a Louisville player and were just two yards shy of Lamar Jackson’s record for rushing yards by a UofL quarterback. Cunningham set the Louisville record for yards per carry in a game by a player with at least 10 attempts, averaging 20.4 in the win over Duke. With the three rushing touchdowns against BC, Cunningham became the third quarterback in school history to rush for three touchdowns in a game, joining Benny Russell (1965) and Lamar Jackson, who did it six times. With 224 yards versus Duke— the sev- enth 100-yard of his career— Cunningham became the 17th player in school history to rush for 2,000 yards in a career. Cunningham ranks sixth in school his- tory with 2,619 yards. 2019 2020 2021 Scoring Offense (Ranking) 33.1 (33rd) 29.55 (55th) 31.62 (41st) Total Offense (Ranking) 447.3 (24th) 444.2 (29th) 446.2 (21st) Rushing Offense (Ranking) 212.8 (24th) 200.0 (T-29th) 209.8 (22nd) Passing Offense (Ranking) 234.15 (65th) 244.2 (48th) 236.4 (65th) Yards Per Play (Ranking) 6.68 (13th) 6.65 (18th) 6.68 (9th) Rankings Under Satterfield OFFENSE The UofL offense has been a large part of the team’s success, putting up huge numbers, racking up big plays and outscoring the opposition.
