He previously served as an assistant football athletic trainer at UofL since2018. Love joined the Cardinals after four sea- sons as an assistant football athletic trainer at Kansas, including serving as the interim head football athletic trainer in the spring of 2018. At KU, Love was responsible for the inventory and ordering of medical supplies for the football facility. He also served as an ad- junct professor for the CAATE accredited undergraduate program at Kansas from 2014-18. Before joining the Jayhawks, Love was an assistant athletic train- er at Duke University where he covered baseball and provided as- sistance with the football program. A 2008 graduate from Eastern Illinois with a degree in in ath- letic training, Love earned a master’s degree in athletic training from Kentucky in 2010. At UK, he worked two seasons with the baseball and football programs as a graduate assistant athletic trainer. Following his graduation from Kentucky, Love served as a year- long athletic training intern with the New England Patriots during the 2010 NFL season and began his career as a training camp intern with the San Francisco 49ers in 2007. A native of Mattoon, IL, Love is a member of the National Ath- letic Trainers Association and the Southeast Athletic Trainers’ Asso- ciation. He also holds a Corrective Exercise Specialist certification from the National Academy of Sport Medicine and a Blood Flow Restriction Rehabilitation Certification. Shawn is married to the for- mer Jackalyn Bradley. The couple has a daughter, Beckett, a son, Parks, and twin daughters, Slate and Decker. Luke Mullett Director of Football Technology Luke Mullett was hired as the Director of Football Technology at the University of Louisville in 2018. Mullett oversees all of the digital tech- nology in the football program as well as, coordinates all of the video filming at Louisville ‘s practices and games. He also, supervises and coordinates the video staff. In addition, he works with external companies on the mainte- nances of all of Louisville’s technology, video systems and platforms in the football center. Before coming to Louisville, Mullett served as the Associate Di- rector of Football Operations at the University of Tennessee. Over- seeing and assisting with the day to day operations of the program. Prior to his stop at Tennessee. Mullett spent two years at Marshall University as the Director of Video Services, overseeing the athletic departments video operations as well as, coordinating the technol- ogy and filming needs for the football program. Mullett spent two seasons at his almater Eastern Michigan Uni- versity, as the Football Video Coordinator and also spent time as a defensive graduate assistant before taking over the video duties. Mullett graduated from EMU in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management/marketing. Mullett and his wife Abbie have a son, Weston. Pete Nochta Director of Recruiting Operations Pete Nochta, is a former tight end for theend and graduate assistant for the Car- dinals, and now serves as a recruiting coor- dinator for the football program. Nochta served as the director of high school relations in 2018, director of on-cam- pus recruiting for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, as well as, a graduate assistant in 2014. Nochta played for the Cardinals from 2006-10, where he was a member of the 2007 Orange Bowl squad. Nochta played in 41 games, making over 20 starts, recording 11 career receptions for 146 yards and a pair of scores. Nochta, who was a four-time All-BIG EAST Academic honoree and a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, earned his undergraduate degree in business administration. As director of high school relations and director of on-campus re- cruiting, Nochta was responsible for the organization of all recruit- ing efforts and maintaining relationships with coaches throughout the state of Kentucky. Prior to joining the recruiting staff, Nochta was the position coach for multiple players who have had an opportunity to play in the NFL from Louisville, including Cole Hikutini, Keith Towbridge, Charles Standberry and Gerald Christian. He also mentored Tyler Higbee, Mitchell Henry at Western Kentucky. He also coached Gabe Holmes while a graduate assistant at Purdue. In 2015, Nochta overcame a well-publicized bout with Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and is currently in remission. Nochta’s wife, Alyssa was a UofL cheerleader from 2009-2012. He is the son of Gene and John Nochta and raised in Lexington, Ky. His father, John Nochta was a former KHSAA Coach of the Year in 1999-2000 when he was the head coach at Bryan Station, where he coached former Cardinals Eric Shelton, J.T. Haskins, and Robert Haskins. Before joining Satterfield’s staff, Popo- vich served as as cornerbacks coach and defensive special teams coordinator (kick- off and punt coverage) at Georgia Tech in 2019. In his first season as Yellow Jackets’ cornerbacks coach, Popovich mentored an all-ACC selection in CB Tre Swilling. As defensive spe- cial teams coordinator, he oversaw a unit that blocked three kicks (tied for most in the ACC and 14th nationally) and improved its average kickoff return allowed by nearly six yards over the previous season (from 26.27 ypr in 2018 to 20.91 ypr in 2019). Popovich has 14 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and professional levels, most recently as cornerbacks coach at Boi- se State in 2018. His resume also includes two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and stints at UTSA, Florida International and his alma mater, Miami (Fla.). He was a three-time academic all-Big East honoree as a defen- sive back and special-teams standout at Miami and went on to play professionally for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons and NFL Europe’s Barcelona Dragons. Popovich and his wife, Lara, have two daughters – Sayle and Co- peleigh.joining . Seth Price Analyst Seth Price was hired as an analyst at UofL in 2019. Before joining Scott Satterfield’s staff, Price spent two seasons as a quality con- trol coach at Arkansas State. During his two seasons with the pro- gram, A-State won a combined 15 games and made appearances in the 2017 Camellia Bowl and 2018 Ari- zona Bowl. He spent the 2017 season as a student assistant, specifically working with the running backs position group, player personnel, recruiting aspects and operations. Price moved into the special teams quality control position for the 2018 season, assisting Frank Broyles Award nominee Norval McKenzie with all aspects of special teams. The 2018 campaign saw A-State set an NCAA record in punt return defense (-15 total yards allowed), while also ranking No. 6 in the nation in kickoff re- turn defense. Punter Cody Grace was also named a Ray Guy Award semifinalist during the 2018 season. Price earned his bachelor’s degree in english from Arkansas State University in 2018. Ben Sowders Director of Strength and Conditioning Ben Sowders begins his first season as the the Director of Strength and Condition- ing at the University of Louisville. Sowders joins the Louisville after four seasons at Georgia as the assistant direc- tor, where he helped lead the Bulldogs to the national title game this past season and also guided UGA to three trips to the Southeastern Conference Championship game. During his time with the Bulldogs, he has worked personally with 20 players who played in the National Football League, including 15 who are currently on NFL rosters. Before joining the staff at Georgia, Sowders spent one season as director of strength and conditioning at McNeese State. Prior to the 2017 season, he spent two years on the strength and conditioning staff at Georgia Tech and two years as the director of strength & conditioning at Gardner-Webb, where he was responsi- ble for the training of the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ 21 Division I programs. A native of Bowling Green, Ky., Sowders was an assistant strength & conditioning coach at Southern Miss from 2012-13. While at Southern Mississippi, Sowders coached the men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, softball and assisted with football. Before his time at Southern Miss, he completed a six-month in- ternship at Alabama, working with the Crimson Tide football pro- gram, while also sharing time with the volleyball, tennis, and row- ing teams at Alabama. His first job in the profession came as a facility coordinator and head strength & speed coach with D1 Sports Training in Nashville, Tenn., where he worked with a handful of notable NFL players, including Steve Smith, Jerome Bettis, Donovan McNabb, and Kyle Vanden Bosch. He earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science in Decem- ber 2008 from Western Kentucky, where he was a linebacker for the Hilltoppers. He entered the program as a walk-on, but he later earned a scholarship and completed his playing career as a two- year starter. As a starter in 2008, Sowders recorded 47 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss for the Hilltoppers and added 29 tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss in 2007. He received his master’s degree in recreation and sport adminis- tration in August of 2010 from WKU. Sowders, who is married to Shelbee Rodgers, is a Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa) and is also certified by USA Weightlifting.SUPPORT STAFF 2022 LOUISVILLE FOOTBALL GoCards.com | @UofLFootball 121 MEDIA TEAM COACHES REVIEW HONORS PROS RECORDS U OF L PREVIEW Mark Speir Chief of Staff Mark Speir is in his first season as the Chief of Staff at Louisville for head coach Scott Satterfield. Speir came to Louisville after serving at Appalachian State as a senior analyst for the 2021 season. Speir was a member of Jerry Moore’s staff at App State from 2003-11, helping the Mountaineers win three straight national championships and six conference titles in those nine seasons. That success led to him being hired as the head coach at Western Carolina, where he was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National FCS Coach of the Year award during his 10 years with the Catamounts. A Kannapolis, N.C., native, Speir has spent three decades in coaching and maintained close ties to App State, where his son Zeb was a quarterback under Scott Satterfield from 2015-18 and his youngest son, Jackson, is currently a student. In addition to serving as App State’s recruiting coordinator from 2004-11, Speir coached running backs (2003-04), defensive line- men (2005-08), defensive ends (2009-10) and inside linebackers (2011) in Boone. In 2009, he was named the national FCS Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association. App State posted a combined record of 92-28 during Speir’s previous nine seasons with the program, and he was the position coach for six All-Americans: DL Jason Hunter, DL Marques Murrell, DL Gary Tharrington, DL Anthony “Whopper” Williams, DL Jabari Fletcher and LB Jeremy Kimbrough. Zeb Speir Quality Control Zeb Speir became a member of the Uni- versity of Louisville football staff in 2019. Speir comes to Louisville after wrapping up his collegiate career at Appalachian State in 2018. The Sylva, N.C. native spent four seasons as a quarterback on Scott Sat- terfield’s team, appearing in five games over his final two years. Speir was a member of the Appalachian State football team that captured three consecutive Sun Belt Confer- ence championships and four straight bowl victories. As a player, Speir was a member of the Head Coach’s Leadership Council and selected to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s List. The son of Louisville’s Chief of Staff Mark Speir, he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in communication/public relations in December of 2018. Vijay Stingley Offensive Quality Control Vjiay Stingley is in his second season as a member of the Louisville football staff. Stingley was an offensive graduate as- sistant for the Cardinals i in 2021, working with the wide receivers. He assisted in the game planning with head coach Scott Sat- terfield and led the wide receiver drills. Stingley joined the Louisville staff after one season as an offen- sive graduate assistant at Lamar amd spent one season in the same capacity at Northwestern State. A graduate of Sam Houston State, Stingley began his coaching career there in 2015, He earned a Kinesiology degree in 2017 and picked up his master’s in sports management in 2018. Josh Thompson Director of Football Operations Josh Thompson joined the Cardinals as the director of football operations in De- cember of 2018. Thompson spent 10 years working at Appalachian State, his alma mater. A 2002 graduate, Thompson returned to Boone, N.C. in 2009 as the director of team ser- vices, overseeing the equipment operations for all 20 varsity sports programs. In September of 2014, Thompson was promoted to assistant athletics director for football and equipment operations, where he oversaw the day-to-day operations of Appalachian State football and served as the program’s primary administrator and department liaison with official shoe and apparel supplier, Nike. Prior to returning to Appalachian State, Thompson served two years as the athletic equipment manager at Texas State and two years on the football equipment staff while earning a master’s de- gree in sport and fitness management at Troy. Thompson also spent time at Northwestern High School in his hometown of Rock Hill, S.C. working as equipment manager, assistant athletics administra- tor and junior-varsity girls basketball coach.
