< PreviousSoon after being hired to lead the Cardinals, head coach Dan McDonnell intro- duced an intense test of physi- cal and mental stamina during his first fall at the University of Louisville with what he refers to as the Omaha Challenge. Two captains are selected and teams are drafted to com- pete against one another in a five-day series of events that tests the athleticism of the teams and the individu- als, with a team crown and an individual champion to be named at the conclusion. Sports performance coach Zach Farrel oversees the intense competition, while also motivating his charges to extend themselves to their limits. Among the criteria for awarding the scholarship to an active member of the UofL baseball team includes that the student- athlete be in good academic standing, active within the CardsCare outreach program and demonstrates exemplary leadership qualities on and off the field. Jimmy Carraro was a member of the Cardi- nals baseball team while he attended UofL in the mid 1970’s. The Jimmy Carraro Award was given annually from 2000-15 to a UofL base- ball player who exceled in academics, athletics and community involvement, strives for excel- lence and personifies good sportsmanship. At the conclusion of every academic calen- dar, one male and one female student-athlete are chosen to receive the Ed Kallay Award for service to the community as well as accom- plishments in the classroom and on the field competition. The baseball team is proud to have supported nine Ed Kallay Award winners. The Diamond Dolls are comprised of 30 young ladies who work at all home, away and postseason games, and various other events affiliated with the baseball program. The squad serves as the primary hostesses at Jim Patterson Stadium and their responsibili- ties include meeting and greeting the fans, recovering foul balls, retrieving bats and helmets, assisting the promotional team with game day promotions and giveaways and assisting the umpires, attending volunteer work with the baseball team, etc. The squad is chosen by applications and interviews during the fall semester with co- captains and representatives of the baseball coaching staff. Members of the team must tryout each year regardless of status with the group the previous year. Requirements for consideration for the Diamond Dolls include being a full-time student at the University of Louisville with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, par- ticipation in other campus activities, flexible class and work schedule, good communica- tion skills and a team mentality. 90 University of Louisville | gocards.com The Diamond Dolls2020 Season ReviewThe University of Louisville baseball team had a successful start to the 2020 season before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the season. The Cardinals held a 13-4 record through 17 games and were ranked as high as second when the season came to a halt. Three Cardinals Selected in 2020 MLB Draft, Two Others Sign Contracts Despite the 2020 Major League Baseball draft having just five rounds, the Cardinals were featured prominently with three play- ers selected, including two in the first round. Left-handed pitcher Reid Detmers was taken 10th overall by the Los Angeles Angels and right-hander Bobby Miller followed at No. 29 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was the second time the Louisville program had multiple players selected in the first round (2016). Outfielder Zach Britton was also selected, going in the fifth round to the Toronto Blue Jays. Following the draft, infielder Justin Lavey (Seattle Mariners) and outfielder Danny Ori- ente (Arizona Diamondbacks) signed free agent contracts. Detmers Named Collegiate Baseball All-American Left-hander Reid Detmers was named to the Collegiate Baseball All-American team, making him the 11th two-time All-American in program history. Despite only making four starts in the shortened 2020 season, Detmers was domi- nant leading the Cardinals’ rotation. The southpaw was 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA, striking out 48 with just six walks in 22 innings on the mound. Detmers was second nationally in strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings (19.64). The Chatham, Ill., native struck out at least nine batters in all four starts in 2020, including 14 in six shutout innings against Valparaiso and 15 over six scoreless frames in his final start at Wake Forest. Borden Earns Freshman All-America Honors Infielder Tim Borden II earned recognition for his strong effort during the shortened 2020 season, as he was named to Collegiate Base- ball Newspaper’s freshman All-America team. After sitting out the 2019 season, Bor- den saw the field for the first time in 2020 platooning at second base. The Sellersburg, Ind., native made the most of his opportuni- ties, hitting .444 with a pair of doubles, a home run, nine RBIs and nine runs scored. Borden drove in multiple runs in three contests and came off the bench as a pinch hitter for his first collegiate long ball against Western Michigan on March 1. He also col- lected at least one hit in seven of his eight starts. Mowing Down Hitters in Record Fashion The Louisville pitching staff took aim at the record book in the Cardinals’ opening home series of the season against Valparaiso. In the series opener, junior Reid Detmers fanned 14 in just six innings of work, includ- ing eight of the first nine batters. Glenn Albanese followed with five punchouts in two innings and Michael Kirian tallied three more in the ninth. The 22 strikeouts were a nine-inning program record and tied for the 10th-most in NCAA Division I history in a nine-inning game. The total is also tied with Texas A&M for the most in a single game this season. UofL pitchers combined to strike out 45 hitters on the weekend, tying the record for the most in a three-game series in program history previously done in 2019 against Ala- bama A&M. Cardinals Tabbed as Preseason No. 1 For the first time in program history, the Louisville baseball program opened up the season as the top-ranked team in the country. The Cardinals were selected as the No. 1 team by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, D1Baseball and Perfect Game. This marks just the second time the Cardinals have been the top-ranked team, having held the No. 1 ranking for a pair of weeks during March of 2017. UofL was ranked second in the other three major polls, sitting behind Vanderbilt in the Baseball America, NCBWA and USA Today Coaches rankings. Louisville in National Polls Every Week Since Start of 2012 Louisville, which surpassed its previous high national ranking of No. 2 (in 2016) with the No. 1 ranking on March 13 and March 20 during the 2017 season, has enjoyed a historic run by remaining ranked in at least one major national poll every week since the release of the 2012 preseason rankings -- the longest such span in school history. Ranked in the top 25 in all six major preseason polls for 2019, the Cardinals have earned a preseason national ranking in 12 straight seasons (2008-2019) overall. Louisville entered the 2019 season ranked fourth in the D1Baseball rankings, eighth in the Perfect Game and USA Today polls, ninth in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and NCBWA rankings and 11th by Baseball America. Feeling at Home Inside Jim Patterson Stadium Since opening the gates at Jim Patterson Stadium in 2005, the Cardinals have won more than 77 percent of their games in the ballpark posting a 404-115 record (.778 winning percentage), including an impres- sive 33-4 mark during the 2017 season at the corner of Third and Central. The Cardinals were 33-8 on their home field this season. Louisville set a school record for home wins with 36 in 2016 and the Cardinals have reg- istered 30 or more wins at home in five of the last seven seasons.
