Whether it’s through conditioning in the Omaha Challenge, or in preseason scrimmages, McDonnell believes in creating competitive situations to give his players numerous opportu- nities to prepare for what they will see during conference and NCAA Championship games. One of the most effective ways McDonnell and his coaching staff can provide the Louisville players with those competitive, game-like situations is through the annual Pizza Bowl series. Following seven weeks of fall practice sessions, the Cardinals take to the field for what started as a one-game scrimmage in the fall of 2006 and has become an ultra competitive multi-game intra-squad series. The Pizza Bowl series has become an exciting and highly anticipated end- ing to the fall for Louisville coaches, players and fans. Eclipse Park burned down in 1922 and Parkway Field was constructed in 1923 on the UofL campus adjacent to Eastern Park- way. The first UofL home game at Parkway was in 1924 before it became a full-time home to the Cards around 1952. The grandstand was torn down in 1961. Louisville baseball made Parkway home until 1996, when home games were moved to Derby City Field. UofL began to play a portion of its games in Old Cardinal Stadium in 1998 and made it a full- time home in the spring of 2000, when the Louis- ville Riverbats moved to Louisville Slugger Field. The spacious confines of Cardinal Stadium on the grounds of the Kentucky Exposition Center played host the Cardinal Nine for the first 20 games of the 2005 slate before the move to spectacular Jim Patterson Stadium. Parkway saw its final demise on January 15, 2005 when the “Green Monster” was torn down. Remnants of historic Parkway Field were brought to Patterson Stadium as bricks from the wall support the lighting towers and infield dirt was placed on the mound and plate area. Today, the Cardinals have a stadium and adja- cent facilities to call their own and are among the best in the nation. Rose Named Freshman All-American After a stellar first season, Zion Rose was named a Freshman All-American by Perfect Game. Rose earned First Team honors and becomes the 20th Freshman All-American in program history, and the first since Logan Beard in 2022. The Chicago native was a catalyst for the Louisville offense in his first season, leading the Cardinals with a .380 batting average. He finished with 19 extra-base hits, 32 RBIs, 42 runs scored and 10 stolen bases, and led all ACC freshmen in batting average during the regular season. Rose took his game to another level when squaring off against ACC competition, hitting .396 in those games, the second-best mark of any player in the conference. Rose led the Cardinals in conference play in average, hits, runs, triples and on-base percentage. Gongora, Corbett Selected In 2024 MLB Draft The Louisville baseball program had a pair of players selected on the final day of the 2024 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Sebastian Gongora was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 11th round with the 339th overall pick, while Kaleb Corbett was taken 606th overall in the 20th round by the Tampa Bay Rays. Gongora served as the Friday night starter for the Cardinals in his lone season in a Louisville uniform. The Wright State transfer went 5-4 with a 6.14 ERA in 15 starts, lead- ing the team with 89 strikeouts and 77.2 innings pitched. Corbett wrapped up his fourth season in a Louisville uniform this spring. The Louisville native threw 104.1 innings during his col- legiate career, posting a 5-3 overall record with seven saves. Three Cardinals Selected To Compete With USA Collegiate National Team Louisville was represented by three stu- dent-athletes competing during the 2024 sum- mer with the USA Collegiate National Team. Tucker Biven, Patrick Forbes and Zion Rose were among the players chosen to rep- resent their country. Adding the trio to the list gives Louisville 21 players that have com- peted with the Collegiate National Team. The Collegiate National Team was split into two rosters in 2024, one which compet- ed against Chinese Taipei in the International Friendship Series and the other that played a Summer League Tour against Appalachian League and Coastal Plain League teams. On the field, student-athletes must com- pete in 90 percent of the institution’s games played or must start in at least 66 percent. For pitchers, it is 17 appearances or 25 innings pitched. Three Cards Earn All-ACC Honors The Louisville baseball program had three student-athletes recognized as part of the ACC’s yearly awards. Evan Webster was a second team All-ACC selection, while Gavin Kilen was voted to the third team and Zion Rose was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team. Webster moved into a starting role for his fifth season at Louisville and was excellent as the Saturday starter. The southpaw went 5-3 on the season with a 4.18 ERA starting all 15 weekends. Webster set career highs with 71.0 innings and 62 strikeouts and was one of the top strike throwers in the ACC. He finished the regular season fourth in the ACC in walks per nine innings and seventh in strikeout-to-walk ratio. Kilen has had a special sophomore sea- son for the Cardinals. He finished with a .330 average, leading Louisville in hits (71), doubles (23) and total bases (127). His 23 two-baggers were tied for the fifth-most in a single season in program history. After not homering as a freshman, Kilen tallied nine in 54 games to give him 35 extra-base hits. Rose was a highly-ranked prospect when he enrolled at Louisville and he came in and made an immediate impact. The freshman led the Cardinals with a .380 batting average during the regular season, racking up nine doubles, five triples and five home runs. Rose also notched 10 stolen bases and finished with more walks (19) than strikeouts (18). Louisville Continues Excellence In The Classroom The Louisville baseball program turned in another outstanding year in the classroom, capped off by its 26th consecutive semester with a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The Cardinals posted a 3.275 team GPA during the spring semester, extending its streak that dates back to 2011. The span of 26 straight semesters with a team GPA of 3.0 or better coincides with unparalleled success on the field for Louis- ville, which has four College World Series appearances, seven NCAA Super Regional berths, nine NCAA Regional bids and eight conference championships during that time. King Jr. Named ACC Player Of The Week Eddie King Jr. was named the ACC Player of the Week following the final week of conference play. The junior had a series to remember as the Cardinals swept three games against Notre Dame to close out the regular season. King went 6-for-10 in the three games, homering five times and driving in eight. He opened the weekend with a two-homer game before adding one in the second game and two more in the series finale. King led the Cardinals with 14 home runs and 43 RBIs, setting new career highs in both categories. Gongora Earns ACC Pitcher Of The Week Honor Following a standout performance against NC State, left-hander Sebastian Gongora was named the ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week. The senior was dominant in Louisville’s series opening 11-1 victory over No. 19 NC State. Gongora turned in a seven-inning complete game effort, striking out a career high 11 batters in the process. The Dayton, Ohio, native surrendered just one run on a solo home run while allowing three hits. Gongora dominated the middle innings on Friday night, recording strikeouts for eight of his nine outs in the third through fifth frames. His pitching performance was part of a big weekend for the Cardinals that saw them turn in a three-game sweep of the Wolfpack. Louisville Has First Inning To Remember Against WKU It was a record setting first inning for the Cardinals against Western Kentucky on April 23. The Cardinals sent 18 batters to the plate, scoring 13 runs on 11 hits with all nine hit- ters reaching base without recording an out to start the inning. The 13 runs were the most in any inning on record in program history. Louisville launched three home runs in the frame, including a grand slam from Gavin Kilen. Eddie King Jr. went back-to- back with Kilen and Zion Rose later added a two-run shot. Tucker Biven Eddie King Jr.Next >
